Default Ever see slicks do this? (Pirelli Grand Am's)

I've run a few different types of slicks but have yet to see a tire do this...

I bought these before it got cold last year and just got a chance to use them at the end of February. I noticed a small crack on one of the rears after 3 short sessions.

Last weekend I headed out to VIR again and forgot about the crack. After another 3 sessions that sucker is HUGE. It looks like a semi-truck retread falling apart. Now the other rear tire is starting to propogate.
You cant see how deep it is in the pictures.

I realize they are scrubs, but I've run plenty of scrubs and never had anything like this happen. This sucks because now I guess I have to toss (what were) perfectly good tires.

Is anyone else running these? It seems like it took forever to get heat in them.

Yup

That is the two ends of the rubber caucus that butt each other. They are coming apart

some of the V700s (and I've seen some 710s) used to do that

I've never seen a Hoosier do it

I guess there's no way to know what your getting until it's too late. I'm happy they didnt fly apart at 155mph.

Where are you folks getting your slicks these days? Also, what seems to be the majority of what's in the market?

Contact the rep you may find they make good on the tire for you in exchange for getting them back.

Is there a directional rotation for mounting those Pirellis' ? If my memory is correct Kumho used to recommend reversing the rotation(flipping) of the tire to prevent the splice from growing. I can see a small splice developing on one of my Yokohama slicks but it is much smaller than yours.

It happens. It's likely somewhere along the line they got exposed to the cold. The Pirellis that GA used were famous (notorious) for that. Several years ago, Hoosier had a whole run of the R3S03 (I believe) that did that, and they didn't have to get cold to do that.

Will do.

I was thinking cold could have been the issue as well. I kept them wrapped up and out of the cold, but that doesn't mean at some point in their life it could have happened.

Thanks all.

I have been told (by the track side dealers) that this can happen on the Goodyear bias slicks we use on our Prod car. Even though it is not indicated on the tire, there is a particular direction of rotation they want us to use for the first heat cycle. After that the tire can be used on any corner of the car.

Like on Hoosiers your supposed to mount the date codes to the inside first, then you can rotate/flip whatever.

When I first looked at the pictures I thought I was looking at the 710s I used to run. They all did that after a while. One way to reduce the problem is to swap the wheels from side to side every so many sessions. Moving from side to side reverses rotation and evens out the stretching the tread sees due to hard braking. I would run my Kumho's until the separation got a lot worse than that.

If they aren't throwing sparks they're still good.

Bill

Eric is not an anus, he is just too slow to ever get any real heat into the tires.

Ive had a few Goodyear slicks do the seam splice crack. The consensus is its ok to use as normal and I did. I never had a problem, but Id check with Pirelli and others using these tires for guidance. If it happened to you, it probably happened to the Pros.

All my 710's do that more/less. I reverse the direction each event & it seems to stabilize.

My a6's never do that.

Wish Kumho could figure out how to butt splice.
