looking for an aftermarket seat to give me more head room in a potential c6 vette. Anyone have any suggestions?

I just sat in a c6 coupe and a c6 z06. As they sit, neither have enough headroom. I'm looking for ways to gain room so I may purchase one of these vehicles and enjoy it, as I'm 6'8", headroom is important.

any ideas would be appreciated.

Right now I'm thinking about just putting an Ultrashield on seat rails and putting it in my c5 vette for a headroom trial.

Aluminum seats potentially sit much lower than composite. My Kirkey seat is actually too low right not. You can also cut the fiberglass/wood floor so that the rails sit down against the reinforcement, instead of up on top of the wood.

I've got a Kirkey on the passenger side and a Sparco on the driver side. The Kirkey sits a LOT lower since it's a bottom mount and the Sparco is on Hardbar side mounts.

Changing your seat rails will also allow you to gain more head room.

I have a custom fit Ultrashield mounted on Harbar rails and the seat is on the floor. The only way to get more head room than that is to cut out the stock floor. I'm 6'4" and my car is a C5Z. When it comes to racing sports cars I'm very glad I'm not any taller.

There was a gentleman who used to post on here as TOOTALLBOB and he was over 7' If I remember correctly. He completely removed the seat and had a custom setup done that used the floor and rear bulkhead wall as the "seat". It was a neat idea and worked perfectly for him.

+1 just did this to the C5 Z06, with the chair sitting on the carpet we gained 1 inch inch removing insulation and carpet under the seat.
Did not go through the bottom of the floor.
Only had to remove an 8"x20" section of the floor insulation for the seat to drop down.
I'm 6'6" and now fit with helmet and hans.

Kirkey also made a custom chair to fit me, price was fair.
The seat came with a custom fit cover, but I plan add a thin back saver pad where needed.

With the Kirkey chair mounted back and low you might find the steering wheel is now too far away. An aftermarket momo wheel with about a 5 inch spacer put the wheel where I needed it. In the photo I used a Momo/vette adapter, a 1 inch spacer, the horn kit along with a quick release . With the wheel spacer now I have 2 inches of clearance between my legs and the steering wheel, much nicer.

Got all the steering wheel parts from LTB in Florida. Also added 5 point race belts. Stock shifter location felt much better with new chair location.

My C5 ZO6 was tootallbob's, he sold it a couple months ago.
Bob has a couple dedicated track cars that keep him busy these days.

thanks for all the tips. How about finding a seat that I can live with on a daily basis? I've looked at the kirkey stuff and ultrashield will custom make something for me, but I don't need to get into a super duper road race outfit for daily driving do I?

Beerkat made me some seat rails a year back, and I guess I'll just get a standard Kirkey for $160 and see how that works.

How about all the memory seat position crap? am I gonna have perpetual error codes from having the stock seat removed? or is there a cure for that yet?

you just lose the airbag and telescoping wheel without an adapter.

btw, removing the headliner in a C6Z gets a little headroom back.....the Z06 headliner "swoops" way down below the actual skin of the roof. We've had our out since the car was new.

Ultrashield will make a seat custom-fit to your measurements for an extra $100. That includes the seat and the custom seat cover. If you're 6'8" then, like me, your back will cover the harness pass-throughs on all standard seats and the shoulder wings will be way too low.

Having a custom fit seat was the best money I've ever spent. Plus, a fully cusomized Ultrashield is still only about $540 shipped.... cheaper than any Sparco!

Good pts, a low shoulder can block your arm from pulling back on the shifter.
Thigh support can be fitted with aluminum chair.
Bead seat an aluminum chair can help too.

At just 6’6” If I had more cheese I'd get a nice set of Porsche GT3 seats.
I prefer 5 point belts to the 6pt.
If only they were street legal here.

Ultimately, I would have liked to have put in a permanent seat like the Ultrashield into the Vette for me, but because my wife (all 5'4" of her vs. me at 7'0"+) occasionally drove the car, I had to have a seat that could be swapped out in between sessions quickly so we could both use the car during the day. Those "pads" shown in David Farmers pics were held in with velcro and it took about 10 seconds to remove them so I could put the stock seat back in place for the wife. I was essentially sitting on the floor pan, and the side bolsters gave pretty good support.

I do believe that if you mount a racing seat directly to the floor without rails, someone at only 6'8" tall would fit fine. Unfortunately, when you are taller than normal you have to make some compromises, and this is one of them. We tall guys must live in a short-man's world.
