Default Cooling Fan Removal?

Wondering if those of you racing track only C5's have removed the cooling fans? If so has the cooling been adequate? I am running a Ron Davis and on track temps are around 180-190 even on HOT days. I would like to get that weight off the front. Since there are not really any idle periods, and I have mine programmed to shut off at 30 mph anyway. Thanks!

Either your gauge is wrong or you're not running hard enough.

You may be right, I have mainly been running DE'S
However in Comp School at Little Talladega I ran it hard for about 15 laps with no traffic. It was about 80 ambient outside and I never saw over 190. Maybe I should check the gauge
I am sure I need to pick it up some though
Do you run the fans on yours?

Dennis,
I've got stock cooling in my 01 C5Z and I saw 240-250 at Road Atlanta last month running TTA. Ambient temp was about 73. Oil temp went up to 282.

Check the HUD temp reading and the DIC temps to make sure they are reading the same. A friend's of mine says he gets 2 different readings, but I've never seen that.

I also have an analog coolant gauge on my dash. There is a hole for the sensor probe in the back of the head on the passenger side. I had to go to that as a back up because my digital gauge will sometimes quit, and I needed to make sure it wasn't overheating.

Yea, I still have my fans installed. The only time they're used is in the paddock or when we have a red flag. Removing them could be a problem, particularly when you have to stop on track such as for a red flag or on the cool down lap and everyone packs up getting off track.

Granted, that's be some nice weight to lose.

Most LS6's I'm familiar with run in the 220-230's on hot days. I've modified my radiator intake and tightened the shroud a bunch to keep it cool, otherwise it gets real hot.

Good luck in ST2!

Must be talking about oil temp. You would have been taking a bus home if that was your water temp.

I'm thinking about picking up a couple of pit bulls since I hear Wally is looking for one and I'm sure he knows how to read a map.

Greg
Thanks Greg, I used to run about 230 coolant and 275 oil before I put in the Ron Davis - now coolant temp is way down and oil temps are around 230

Thanks-Thats all good advice from experience I hadn't thought about the cars stacking up trying to get off track etc.
The extra gauge is not a bad idea either, I think I finally have my HP Tuners stand alone data logger working so I am going to try to gather data from the PCM next time out.

I removed the headlights and motors etc. yesterday- I guess I am just getting greddy on weight
Thank you I am really looking forward to ST2 I know it is going to be an eye opener for me

No problem.

It's always easier and far cheaper to learn from someone else's experience than your own.

I know, I've got the scars and empty checkbook to prove it.

You and me both!

As for the fan question, you might save a little weight now, but as others have said, one red flag and you might be looking for a new engine. If you really feel the need, look into smaller, lighter alternatives.

so you never sit on the grid with the engine running....or stack up coming off of the track???? I understand that you don't need it once you get on track, but I've run with few groups (DE or racing) that get you on and off the track with enough speed to keep temps down.

You can "open up" your shroud to improve air flow when you are moving, but I personally would never remove the fans

That's what I've done on my last two Z06s. Here's a picture from my current TTA car.

As said, too risky, leave them on.

I got the headlight delete kit from Mark, but have not installed it. Headlights come in handy in the rain. That's the only chance I have to win!

Didn't know you were already in ST2, looking forward to seeing you out there!

Do the headlights really help you see better? Our DRLs are quite bright if you need something for others to see you.
