Which tire size and why?
I've pretty much decided V710s are for me. I just bought a spare set of stock C5Z06 wheels to mount them on for track use only. Here is my size choice delema.
Front:
275/40R17 = $230
Rear:
305/30R18 = $310
or
315/35R18 = $301
I would normally take the 305/30, but the 315/35 is more tread for less money. What would you suggest?

I've been running Nitto NT555 RIIs and I'm extremely pleases with them. 275/40-17 front and 305/35-18 rear. Discount Tire Direct price is $174 for the fronts and $276 for the rear. $900 total. Free shipping and no tax. A local tire store mounts and balances them for me for $50.
Was is your intended purpose? Auto X? HPDE? Time Trials? W2W?

HPDE. I just wore out my set of Azenis RT-615s and I'm looking to go faster. I got the second set of wheels so I could get a real track tire and not have to compromise with a street tire like I have been doing. I don't know where RIIs fit into the performance scheme but it looks like they are below the Nitto NT-01s. I was planning on buying them but decided to go up the ladder, not down. That price you quoted is incredibly cheap though. The V710s are $1126 shipped. So just over $200 more.

They are very similar to NT01s. I ran them for time trials last month at Road Atlanta and best time was 1:39.6 which was good for second in class. First in class was on Hooiser A6s and ran a 1:35.3. They stick very well and I'm considering going with the 285/35-18 on all 4 corners.

Besides, it is fun to "run what you brung", and beat the people using slicks with the same street tires you are driving to and from the track.

Ok, so I am going to ask a touchy question. How were you running on those tires? If your abilities exceed the capabilities of the tire, move up. If you are still progressing, I suggest staying off the v710s/Hoosiers. You learn a lot more from making lesser tires go faster. (clean, smooth lines; brake points; weight transfers) DOT slicks will make you faster in the short run, but they cannot make up for experience in the long run.
Besides, it is fun to "run what you brung", and beat the people using slicks with the same street tires you are driving to and from the track.

In that case Hoosiers are typically faster than the Kumhos. Then again, I like NT01s; and a track prepared C6 on race tires could not get catch my stock C4 with soft suspension. He had well over 100hp more, better suspension, race tires, and he had a crew to set up his car. I just drove up, adjusted air pressures, and embarrassed him.
As for the original question, tire size: If you need more rubber on the back, get it. Otherwise it might not be worth the extra weight. Also consider the balance of the car, and that a wider tire on the same rim may not get you much more contact patch.

Yes, but time and again I've read on here that the Kumhos last much longer and their grip tapers off gradually as they wear unlike the Hoosiers. And that's why they are better HPDE tires.
Well I don't really know if I need more rubber, I'm thinking the 305 will be plenty. The tire weight and smaller diameter of the 305/30 is why I would choose the 305, but the 315/35 is cheaper and more rubber. That's why I made a thread to get other's opinions.

The 305/18 V710 fits almost perfect on a 10.5" wheel. I bet it "works" better than the 315. IMHO You really need an 11.5"+ width wheel to properly fit most 315s

I did go to race pads with my street tires and had no real improvement in braking. Surely because my braking was already tire limited but it did stop the pads from fading. I'm sure the tires alone are going to make my braking leaps and bounds better.

As for the rears, I run 315/35/17 on 11 inch rims. A perfect fit. Now the fronts are same size on 9.5" rims. Kinda like an elephant wearing spandex, but they were free race tires and the only rims I have to work with.

I'm not seeing a V710 in that size. I see a 295/40/17 for $245/tire. Where di you find a 295/35/17? Thanks for the input, it's another choice I had not considered.

I was looking at Hoosiers black crack! I was looking at rim & tire size. I ran Kumhos years ago and had problems that were only made worse by Kumho and Tire Rack both blaming each other with no answers.
