What are the communications devices called that are used for in car communications between an instructor and student? Who has them etc?

Try a search for Chatterbox. There are several vendors for it.

Try OG Racing. I just bought the complete set from them, while others only had pieces.

Yep, Chatterbox, HJC-50.
I've been using them for 12 years.

Note that you should pick the headsets that work for you depending on weither you want to permanetly mount yours in your helmit.

And the "student headset" is what you want for your driver.

The only thing with the Charretbox is that the unit has to be in the "off" position when charging it. If the unit is on, it won't charge and you'll be pissed when you get to the track (ask me how I know).
