Default good olde z06 pbr calipers lost 2 pads due to loose pins @ RA

gotta love getting a mushy pedal and then go to bleed and you see thise on each side. a must pedal due to a caliper pad bolt coming lose on each side. i have never taken them out either so very crazy they would come loose now. thank god the piston didnt come all the way out. this happened on the left and right caliper, same session

We have had this problem many many times. Once it was an outside bolt, when slowed down enough it slid out and ripped some spokes out of a brand new wheel. Removed all the bolts and re applied some super strong locktight to the threads. Keep spare bolts, pistons and pads on hand. Almost ruined a 4 day track event at WGI. Keep a close eye on them.

Looks like a BBK is in your near future. I am happy with my Stoptech setup, there are plenty others to choose from.

i got my ap's for the fronts but didnt get them back on the car in time for the event so figured i could tear up some of the many pads i had sitting around for stock calipers at this event, at this problem though would be getting bbk up front if this happened and if i didnt have one already.

hell all the inside bolts were loose actually on the one side

problem would not have occured if i had been running the one piece front pads

Not sure what causes them to come loose. Mine were frozen in the caliper and I was afraid I was going to break off my new Torx bit like I did the previous one trying to get the bolts out. Then a grinding noise while on track and my LGM wheel has a groove on the backside of the spokes due to a pin that was frozen in for the last year and a half coming out.

The only good solution may be to get the bolts with regular heads on them and safety wire them.

It isn't just a pre event check. You almost need to do it before each session.

These stock pins do seem to be quite troublesome. I had several not want to come out.

Why the failure?

1. not torqued properly?

2. not loctite'd?

Torquing could be accomplished during preflight through wheel spokes?

Good info on the OEM Z binders

I agree and a very good solution.

I doubt loctite will accomplish much because it will fail as soon as it gets hot.

I've safety wired 1000's of bolts on USAF fighters, where are you going to drill to secure the .032 wire?

I don't have any of the aftermarket pins that a normal head instead of a Torx or Allen head but I suspect there is enough room to drill the head of the those bolts.

Another thing that could be done is to clean the heads and the surrounding caliper with Wax and Grease Remover and then use Permatex Ultra Black Gasket material to keep the bolt from turning. Just put a smear on the edge of the bolt crossing over onto the caliper. Don't put it in the area where you would put your Torx wrench. This stuff is good up to 500 degrees and should put just enough stiction on the bolt to keep it from turning. When you want to remove the bolt just take a razor blade and cut the gasket at the edge of the bolt hole.

It should only take a small amount on each bolt head.

I got rid of my padlets the first track event. I even run Carbotech Bobcat one piece pads on the street.
