Default AP T1 questions

To you guys who have the brakes, a few questions after the install;

Why are two different caliper to bracket bolts supplied? I used the short bolt with two shims. The long bolt seemed too long.

Here is a pic of the caliper to bracket connection

As far as the pad fitment, they stick out from the rotors about 1/2 mm, is this ok?

Those are Nordlocks, not shims. Definitely run those as they will prevent that bolt from loosening.

The longer bolts were the ones Gary originally sent with the kit, requiring 2 sets of Nordlocks. He then sent out the shoulder bolts with the shortened threads that only require 1 set of Nordlocks. Brake package looks nice!

@Len, thanks for the kit. It turned out very nice.

@Derek, those rotors are the same size as the c5 rotors.

I guess I will take out one of the Nordlocks as I used two on the short bolt. I also had to put a shim between the caliper mounting bracket and the spindle. Without the shim, you could not turn the wheel with the lugs torqued, the inside pad did not have enough clearance.

I don't think those are Gary's hats (and I know that's not a J-hook AP ring). what rotors are you running? (they look like coleman rings).

The AP j-hook's may have a slightly larger OD. (ie, that bracket is built to mount that caliper on the 12.8" J-hook AP ring, if you are using a different "12.8" ring, it may have a slightly smaller OD)

Those look like PAFX rotors. Sell me those and buy the proper J-hooks. Thanks.

Those are performance afx rotors.

I believe these are ones for c5 brakes. On their site there is another sold rotor for AP.

I would rather have the J hooks but I hope these can do the trick?

Do you guys see a problem with that small pad overlap on the rotor?

Tim

I am not a Nordlock expert, but I believe they are designed to be used in pairs teeth facing each other, so one Nordlock = same as a flat washer. I would check on that.

Regarding your 2nd question about the pad fitment - mine do that also and some of the pictures I've seen of others suggest its normal. Hasn't been a problem, as the pads wear down the little "lip" just breaks off.

Nordlocks work in pairs. "Teeth" face each other.

I almost aim for that because when the rotor gets hot it expands...

The Nordlocks should be used in pairs. Teeth face each other.

Not sure why you have two different length bolts. Mine had the ends of the threads ground on a 45 degree angle to clear the upright ears (an assumption here) I still had to file the outside flashing on the upright to clear the ends of the bolts.

I think you can see why the threads need to be chamfered:

I use stock rotors and DTC-70 pads which match exactly at the OD. I would not worry about a little bit of overhang.

My brackets were gold anodized.

I also had to shim the bracket .040" to center the caliper on the rotor.

I ran up the road for about a mile and did some hard braking from 70 or so to bed the pads in. Seems to do pretty well, can lock up the cold scrubs at will, so more pedal modulation is needed over stock! It will be nice to run a race without the pedal getting so low I can hardly heel toe shift.
