Default Gears for road racing/auto x

I was wondering what the best gears were for road racing/auto x events. I wont be doing many right now. However, I plan on turning my 03 Z into strictly a track car down the road and don't want to rebuy if i don't have to. The reason why I'm looking to purchase now is that i need to have both sides of my dif replaced and figured I might as well get the gears in at the same time so I'm not paying for labor twice. Thanks for your input

the third gear in your transmission is perfect for road racing. and the lower 1st and second gears should do well in an autocross.

just buy really expensive sticky tires !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tires always always win the race !!!!!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

i tried stock and 4.10 gears in 2002 z06. felt faster with the 4.10 and they were slightly on a road course. used rev limiter a lot in 2nd autocrossing though. ill post a vid from my z autocrossing and road racing later...

First video of Autocross: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ariKh...eature=related

Second video of Road Course: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wFem...eature=related

As you can tell, the car liked the rev limiter with the 4.10 gears, but I didn't think it was a bad thing! Anything I can do to keep in the powerband, even if it means buying "drag racing" gears!

2ND WOULD BE USELESS WITH 4.10 GEARS, 4.10'S FOR DRAG RACING

So you think I should keep the 3.42's and just replace the sills etc to stop it from leaking as opposed to maybe a 3.9 or 3.73?

3.90 is perfect for AX, run most courses in 2nd gear..
But.. to much shifting for road course, i had to go back to 3.42 and that is perfect for that.
Never went back to autox.

What trans M12 or MN6?

There some debate of people saying the drop of 3-4 suck on road courses, and that the MN6 is better?

What ever you have works.

a trans normally is not replaced until it breaks.

But yes the MN6 has a better 3 - 4 combo. the MN12 has a better 5th, but that is almost never used.

Most road course are 3rd and 4th gear courses. On a occasion 2nd gear do to traffic in a tight corner, or a hard launch out of a slow corner. and 5th to save fuel or keep temps down on a long straight.

4th gear is the same ratio with both but the MN6 and MN12 but personally I like the mn6 for road racing.

4.10s wouldn't work IMHO.

My next setup will be the zr1 setup.

with the 3.90 I was using 5th at allmost all tracks..

Thanks everyone for your input...I'll probably end up just repairing with current gears and use the extra cash for a different mod.

Your ideal gearing is going to depend on the majority of the courses you run. Determine the typical autocross track AND road course you are going to run and make a determination based on that.

For me running tracks in the Southeast, a bump of the rev limiter to 6900 and keeping the stock gearing allows me to hold it in third against the limiter at a couple of places at a couple of tracks and also allows me to hold it against the limiter in 4th at a couple of places on a couple of tracks. For these tracks, this has proven faster segment times than shifting up and then shifting back down.

Seat time and more seat time is the BEST mod.

I switched my verts MN6 to a M12 for the better gearing and alot of ppl said the trans alone is perfect for road racing.

most ppl here have the Z06 so they use the MN12. There have been a few to pull the MN12 and put in a MN6

and one guy put in the ZR1 gear box with a 3.90 gear IIRC. and of course he set track records, but then again he does have a wee bit of experience driving or he is just crazy.

use what you have. MM6 or MN12. and use any addition mod money for track time, contact patches, tires, brake pads, seats and harness, and cooling, brake cooling ducts, and an oil cooler, then more track time
