Default Winter Mods -- While I'm in there... ?

Hi all,

I am going to be doing a cam, headers and clutch this winter. Car is a fairly bone stock z06. While i am dropping everything, is there anything else i should do?

Thanks!

Since this is the auto-x/road racing forum...

1. Skip the cam/headers/clutch (unless the clutch is going bad)

2. Spend the money on tires and track time

What are your 2012 plans for your Corvette? Road course (HPDE) and Auto-X? If yes, then:

(1) Goodridge Stainless Steel Brake Lines
(2) ATE Super Blue or Gold DOT 4 Brake Fluid
(3) Carbotech XP10 (front) and XP 8 (Rear) Brake Pads
(4) DeWitts Direct Fit Radiator #A97M (Engine Cooling)

Good sticky street tires are the best tires to learn on vs. any R compound tire until much later with more experience. You'll learn more car control techniques with street tires.

I would focus on brake performance and engine/oil cooling for the road course in conjunction with your cam, headers and clutch upgrades this winter.

Seat time is the best 'bang for the buck'

Two OEM parts that are known to fail that require roughly the same labor are the oil pump and the balancer. They both happened to my friends Z06 over the summer. The balancer failed AFTER he finished putting the car back together from the oil pump.

Oil cooler, accu-sump and trans cooler.

Ok better springs pac 1218s or Comp 918s would be a good choice

Brake Pads, Brake cooling ducts,

Seat and harnesses

nothing but seat time.

I guess i should have added what i have so far -- maybe it is less stock than i think . Mostly stock for engine and suspension. Car has an intake, brake lines, superblue, tune, tires (nitto 555RII), mild lowering on stock bolts and Pac springs. I also have an autopower 4-point bar, 5 point harnesses and courbeu seats ( i couldn't deal with the stock seats after the first autox).

Pads, billsteins and possibly sways to come before season start. I am definitely planning a remote bleeder and amosoil or redline power steering fluid when i do the cam. I have a good amount of autox time (8 events with 10-15 runs each -- 1-2 min courses). I would like to get into some HPDE next year which will very likely happen after some early season autox to work out the bugs. This isn't my first car autoxing so i wouldn't consider myself a noob. definitely looking to step it up a bit. I am more asking, while i am in there is there anything that will improve the car on track?

@ccj, i am surprised to hear the oil pump considering the LS6 pump seems to be the go-to pump. I haven't read of many failures on it either.

You're all set based on your current set of mods and the project you're planning for this winter!

Sign up for lots of HPDE sessions in 2012. Nothing beats experience..... almost nothing. Which road courses do you plan to visit?

You don't say what year the car is, but what I needed last year was an engine oil cooler & better radiator on my 04.

Thanks! I definitely plan on doing a lot of racing next year. I really want to hit limerock, NHIS and possibly glen. VIR if i can find a trailer, Monticello if i can find an event. And of course a lot of autox mixed in.

Sorry, it's an 03 Z06. I've been considering a Dewitts aluminum rad and oil cooler. Locals tell me to stick with a dedicated EOC. I will get there. I have plenty of time

Oh and thanks everyone for the advice!

I've been running a DeWitts radiator for many years. Great product. Regardless of which radiator you go with; definitely get a separate oil cooler vs. an integrated EOC in the radiator for better cooling performance. You can find used steel trailers for approx. $3K.

yeah that is what i keep hearing. I can't get over how expensive the separate kits are. I might have to fab one up myself.

It's not worth it. I saved maybe 75 bucks piecing mine together. The out of the box kits are definitley the way to go.
