Chrysler Group LLC will reopen its Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit to produce the new Dodge Viper.
The Auburn Hills automaker said Tuesday that it plans to employ about 150 people — both hourly and salaried — at the site, which has been closed since July 2010.
However, no new hires are planned. Chrysler said hourly employees who previously worked at the Conner plant will be given first priority to return to the factory; the remainder of the positions will be filled by other current Chrysler employees who volunteer to transfer there to work on the company's vaunted supercar.
"The next-generation Viper will make its return to the product lineup in late 2012 as a 2013 model," said Ralph Gilles, head of Chrysler's motorsports division. "We're extremely excited that our ultimate American sports car will continue to live on and be produced exclusively here in the Motor City."
Production is slated to begin late next year, but some workers have already begun training.

You might want to thank the American taxpayer for giving millions to foreign companies. For decades states slash each others tax bases to get foreign companies while they did little or nothing for domestics while foreign countries laughed at the USA.

Yes, my company is one of those that got nothing for employing ~70 people. Why in the hell my tax money was used to bail out Chrysler, GM, their unions, bankers, and numerous politicians, I'll never understand. I'm fed up and can't stand it much longer. No one has ever offered us anything.

Safety Car
Viper buyers buy them for that... they like the rawness of the car. However, the new one is supposed to be much more of a daily drivable car. Nobody ever checks out any of the Corvettes I've owned, but the one time I took my friend's '03 Viper for a spin and to the gas station I had 15 new friends
Oh... and John... it's not the Dodge Viper anymore. It was just released that it's going to be the SRT Viper and will be dropping the Dodge name moving forward

I have a friend that races many types of cars. His comment was that he bought a Viper racecar because it had "personality." Heh.
If you get the chance, go to a NARRA event and see the big iron go round. They are quite a sight. The center of rotation is in front of the driver, which would feel weird to a Corvette driver, but is likely very fun.
