Default Building LS1 for Autocross and HPDE

The crank broke in my 2000 FRC LS1. I would like to build a motor to take he rigors of HPDE. The car had the following.

1. Patriot Stage II 243 heads
2. Fast 92mm Intake
3. Long Tube Headers and exhuast
4. LS2 throttle body
5. custom grind cam .581 lift both lobes

I am looking for advice on what to put in the car.

1. Type of main bearing, rods, pistons, and crank?
2. Go to 383, or 408 stroker motor?
2. Best place to buy parts for the price.

I am planning for $4500 for the rebuild. I plan to reuse the heads, intake, exhaust and throttle body. I may replace the cam if it makes sense.

Thanks,

Mark

if you can buy an LS6 crate motor go that rout

if your going to rebuild check the block out real good. Open the oiling ports

Keep the displacement as close to stock as possible. But see what your engine build can do.

Remember 6500-7000 rpms is very high rpm use, short strokes may work better then the longer stroke of a 383.

Good Luck

Thanks for the input. I was hoping for a little more information from other that are doing HPDE with their cars. The engine building recommend ARP 2000 fasteners, I am thinking Callies rotating assembly with Clevit race bearing and Mahle pistons.

Not sure on pistons if domed or flat top.

Not sure on how to select the correct cam. I have COMP custom grind cam (3722r custom grind, .581 lift, 224/224). It made 420RWHP and 392RWTQ. Torque band was fairly flat from 2500 up.

I did not want to buy another block if I did not have to. I think if I bought a short block I would go with an LS2. I am trying to find out what people and what has survived.

Any thoughts?

Mark

Your components sound good.

Few have survived, most built motors do need rebuild each year. That is why I suggested the LS6 crate.

Now that said, having a good builder who knows how to build is very important.
the cam is fine you could go 224/230 for a bit more torque. Keep the lift to .581/.588. 112+4 Pac 1218 or comp 918 springs. No need for duel springs.

also plan on a dry sump and oil cooler if at all possible. I know it ads to the costs, but oiling issues are the death of semi race motors.

Good Luck

Just finished my 3rd year on my forged aluminum LS2. I bought short block and cam from Texas-speed. No issues in over 3 years. It does have accusump and oil cooler. Plenty of options and crate LS6 is easiest. When my sc LS6 blew, I looked at a crate LS6, but someone took the time to send me a long email outlining issues with the crank on the LS6. I knew I wanted big hp anyway so I went another direction. My only regret is I didn't go 427. Good luck with build.

I really appreciate the input. I originally wanted to do a forged LS2 short block but the money is a couple thousand more than rebuilding the LS1. I looked for LS6 forged shortblocks and the ones I could find were in the $4K and up range. I was hoping to stay under $4.5K for the entire build. If someone had a good place to get a cost effective shortblock with forged parts I am interested. I am looking at Callies rotating assembly with Mahle pistons right now.

Thank,

Mark

I just picked up an all forged 383 short block from Schwanke Racing Engines for a road race project. It was about about 3500, I then added cam and other extras and spent about 4300 total.

It will be carbureted and use the scavenge only dry sump system.

I have checked their site before. I will have to go back and look again. I did not think it was that cheap. It will be tought to sell off the LS1. I can sell the bare block maybe. the car had a broken crank so I would have to do some replace/rebuild to sell it off.

Did you get and LS1 or LS2?

Thanks,

I have an ls7 shortblock with oil pump,pan,timing cover,stock cam,lifters,rear cover,valley cover,timing set if your interested!
Came out of an 06 z06 with 1200miles on it.Guy pulled it out to build a warhawk ls7.I was going to put it in my 87 vette but have since built my own 481 warhawk ls7 shortblock instead.
I took the factory ls7 down to get checked out anyway even though miles were low because it had been sitting for so long and the are cleaning up cyl with a hone and im having them throw in new bearings for the hell of it from gm.
Then its goin up for sale.
Id take $5500 for everything!
