I have "heard" you ship them by bus freight (think Greyhound) but both sender & receiver have to go the the local bus depot to drop off/pick up.

I just used UShip its a auction type freight forwarding deal.
It cost me $150.00 to ship a 600lbs rear diff from Az to Portland Or.
I will definitely use the service again.

We are buying and selling tires and wheels - meanwhile, FedEx, UPS, and Greyhound are the only ones coming out of it ahead!

There is usually a significant "discount" over FedEx or UPS rates by going Greyhound Freight, especially for larger sized packages. Their max weight is 100 pounds per package. However, Greyhound sends your stuff on a "space available" basis, which means it COULD take a little longer to arrive. Also, their package tracking is not as precise or up to date. I have heard a couple of horror stories about stuff that simply disappeared from the face of the earth for a couple weeks.

The times we have used them, we have had good luck!

Best kept secret in wheel shipping, as long as there is no rush. They have size and weight max (70 pounds), so typically 4 wheels will be 4 separate packages. I shipped 4 wheels and tires to Washington state from NC for a bit over 120. Just takes longer than UPS or FedEx. They have a calculator on their website - enter dimension, weight, destination and get a price.

I shipped a set of wheels today for $78 total using UPS with my company discount. Last week I shipped a set through FedEx as a walk in and it cost about the same.
I always tape 2 boxes together so all 4 wheels only count as 2 packages.

Well some posters are leaving some details out, as the usps is all over the place.

If you have a business account, or access to one, they get huge discounts on shipping. I sold an exhaust and my cost was around $140. The buyer paid $50.

I've looked around and Fed Ex seems to be the cheapest for tires if you ship more than 4 say 8 freight seems to be cheaper.

Boxing is a big issue

Don't box tires, just tape 2 together, slap an address label on them and they're gtg.

Yep... never box tires, just tape them in pairs and go. I ship wheels 2 to a box or in 4 seperate boxes if I have left over wheel boxes. I use a company FedEx account so it's about 1/3rd of what you paid. Lady at work justs asks me to send her the reference numbers and she emails me a total each month and I cut a check... works great.

Are either of you gentlemen aware that BOTH FedEx and UPS have a $7 PER TIRE surcharge for tires that are not boxed? (At least to we unfortunates, who do not have a lady at work billing us monthly for our shipping charges. And Hoosier and Goodyear, because of their shipping volumes, have special arrangements. Maybe Jason and Travis do too? ) Greyhound will not ship "exposed" tires, because the rubber can smudge other luggage.
