LT1 Oil Level
FSM calls for 4.5 qts. this puts it about half way up the hashed area. I auto-x, is it a good idea to overfill to 5 qts? Granted I'm not cornering in any one direction for any length of time, but lots of sloshing.
I know for HPDE it is recommend to run 5 qts. which makes sense.
If so, will running 5qts on the street have any detrimental effects? I have no idea how close the oil level is to the crank and how much clearance I have while it is running.
Thanks

I run 5 to 6 qts in mine for road racing.
Have burned one engine up so I'm going to a road race pan that has better baffles and holds more oil.

Have not seen any ill effects from running mine at 1/2 quart over the hash line over the past ten years. By the way, my LT1 has over 120 track hours(I have lost track of the actual number but I am not far off) on the original engine(heads have never been off), stock pan, Redline 20W-50 and I run on slicks. Knock on wood but I think the LT1 is a pretty tough engine.

If the 93 FSM says 4.5, it must be a misprint.
The 92 FSM says 5.
The FSM's also note to recheck levels, you should be at the full (hot) mark. Especially for HPDE. And a half qt. over that isn't a bad idea.
No, running slightly overfull won't hurt anything.

Thanks, you all confirmed what was thinking. I rechecked my FSM says 4.5 w/filter. I'm going to put in my 5 qt. Mobil 1 5w-30 and call it a day.
Sounds for what I do on street tires, I should have no problems. I also run BG products MOA, good stuff, and it never hurts to have a little extra protection in the oil.
Sidney004, I agree with you the LT1 is tough engine. All SBC's are but as yours attests to, one tough engine. I've seen lots of them running around with 200K+ still running strong and all stock internally.
Just out of curiosity, does your Oil Temps. ever get high? Being track driven and with no oil cooler unless you added one.
