You can no longer carry the top inside or use the pull blind .I have not installed it yet but I did take it out of a stripped 85 . He had plates welded to the rails .Then bolted to the plates .

bolts to the frame once the SMC is cut.
I've seen the top put back there, just not with the stock mounts. and you can't see out the window when it's there.
the added stiffness should more than makes up for the weight added.

Looks good Brian! I have a 4 point in mine that I got used (not sure what brand) and you are correct. I made mounts to hold the top but then I couldnt see a thing out the back! I just left the top on.

With the tint i have it the back hatch cant really see anything when the top in back ther reflecting now, but have the two side mirrors which is enough. When the weather is 75 + which is much of the time here in So Cal. Love to take the top off and cruise from Huntington Beach down to my boat in Dana Point.

Will the bolts handle forces from the shoulder harness belts in case of a crash? How do sanctioning bodies handle a bolt-in bar? I was under the impression that SCCA won't accept a bolt-in bar for tech approval; it must be welded.

What is the method for bolting it in? Nutserts? Weld square nuts to the frame?

No, bolt in bars are accaptable with backup plates (min.thickness required).
Also, for SCCA PDX (HPDE) and Club Trials, since this car is a coupe, there is NO rollbar requirement.
So, if it came thru my tech line, I won't tech it.
If Brian wants to run Track Trials (Time Trials) then the bar must meet the specs. (Most of the cars running Track Trials here are racecars).
The guys who want to run timed runs for points run Club Trials.

I had this exact bar in my car. I just cut the fiberglass and bolted it down. It worked great for autocrossing and it did stiffen the car up which was great. It won't work for a drag strip if your running 11.50's or faster. They made me add to it and weld it down.

I use my '87 primarily for autocross and something like 3-4 track days per year. One of the things I'm looking at is to improve the mounting of my shoulder harness belts. I currently have a R&D Racing harness bar that is mounted way too high in the car based on how it's designed.
Would be great to see how the install goes and some pics of how the shop bolts in the bar. I'm not concerned about keeping the targa top in the back as the car isn't really used for the street and I keep the top in place.

The roll bar looks great. What seat are you going to use? You are not going to use a harness with that seat, are you??? The harness spacing should only be roughly the width of your neck to keep you from slipping through.

Ive got a Kirkey , measure your butt . I used to fit in a 17 inch pretty easy ....15 years ago
No more trying to stay in the seat .
Do you have a pick without carpet ? Some of these bars have a plate that is to the inside of the rail . woundered how yours mounted .
