Default Let me see your wing mounts C5/C6

Acquired a wing this weekend at VIR. Have the basic idea in my head on how I want to mount it. The general idea will be aluminum angle bolted to the rear frame piece and then aluminum flatbar sticking up out of the rear fascia. Any pictures or ideas would be most helpful.

I knew she had to be mine when the end plates were already red and it's the right size 71" vs. the NASCAR COT wings I had been keeping an eye out for.

A bit different than most...but same principal. I also have forward stays to the rear of the cage:

Stays to the cage:

Bracket built to weld to frame. Notice the "X" cross bracing (Macintosh has "X" bracing on his, too. That takes the later forces out of play).

Here it is mounted to the frame.

Geeze... that looks like a fair bit of work. Debating on installing it now or keeping it in the parts pile for eventual full ST2.

Theoretically I should be able to set it up so I have similar downforce to what I have now with my spoiler all with less drag. Still can't do any front aero.

I'm doing my wing mounting very similar as to how Jody and Dennis did theirs.

i cut my rear bumper to fit the mounts tight, so i dont have side flex. All that bracing may be overkill? I dunno. Ive never had a problem

You do know that rear bumper is plastic, right?

Just FYI. A car lost a wing at VIR Friday. Drivers of cars on track with him reported seeing the uprights vibrating laterally prior to the "launch". No oneelse was around the car when the wing took off at brake marker 5 into turn 1, so no damage other than to the car it was mounted on. Driver told me it felt like he had a flat.

It appeared welds attaching the uprights to the mounting plate on the trunk failed. Do not know what support structure there was under the trunk, if any.

Yeah it was Max Fischer's on his GTS-4 BMW. We were joking him that he was lucky he didn't pull a "Phil" i.e. Phil Grabbow who rolled his Element Tuning STI in the upper esses a few years back when his wing snapped off in the lower esses. I was actually two cars back from him when it happened (Phil's incident). Max's car looked like the wing uprights fatigued over time. All of those BMW guys just bolt them to the trunk lid... I've nver thought that was enough..

I really feel the extra bracing is needed on the rear wing, Jody got my attention about this, and after grabbing a hold of the wing and moving it side to side and fore and aft it made me nervous. I did not do the X at the rear between the vertical supports (even though I think it is a good idea), but I do have a connecting rod as high as I could get it between the two supports. The forward strut supports made a huge difference in the stability. Also I think it makes a difference if you are just putting a wing on a combination street/track car that only sees some high speeds and then back down. In a track only car we are out there in some races for 45 minutes, so at a track like Memphis thats 30 times at 146mph, not to mention over 100 mph at other parts of the track. And that is just one race. Then multipy that times a few events and that is a bunch of stress! I think the extra 5 lbs is worth it, heck buy a set of rear two piece rotors from Mark and you will be back where you were. Just my opinion.

Here are a couple videos where I tried to illustrate the difference;

The bumper lends itself well to attaching uprights for a wing, but one thing to consider is what would normally be a light tap on the back could cause some serious handling issues.
Not sure if this has been posted before, but this is what happens if a car is set up to use a wing and then it goes bye bye:

Just because a wing stays attached doesn't mean it is working properly. It may flex and change AOA. Few degrees can make a difference.

Mine has a frame below the rear fascia then the wing mounts with a plate on top sandwich the plastic between. I know you really can't do it on a c6 as hatch goes to far back.
