Let's built the ultimate C5 Auto-x car....
So, here's the challenge: design (on paper) the ultimate C5 auto-x car. Forget about budget.
What motor?
How much power?
What suspension?
What gearing?
What body mods?
What tires / wheels (including size)?
What brakes?
Intake, exhaust, fueling?
NA or FI?
You get the idea.
I'm curious to see people's ideas.
And yes, we all know that seat time is #1. This thread is about THE CAR.

Gut the car and then call ACP for a full carbon body plexi windows with all the aero tricks and let me know if you have any more budget.

find this car on the forum here http://badboyvettes.com/main/display...C5&p=01_sm.jpg was used in auto X only. Someone will know the car here I always liked his build so I posted the picture at the other forum. Also put in side exhaust and plate the bottom of the car. 1" thick two piece rotors x 13" front and 12" rear with some nice calipers from hardbar or some Wilwoods. Leave out the cage if you are not required to have it or it may stiffen the chassis which is good also. Sequential tranny also. Coupe body. Last thing leave DRM or LGM a blank check and they will fill your needs. NEw suspension triple adjustable Penske's.

Burning Brakes
Besides every body knows real men don't do road courses they hillclimb Ok I just had to add that before this becomes a pissing contest between track guys and autox guys.
Any one with the money can pay some one else to build them a fast car, what's interesting to me is how creative racers can be when there on a realistic budget. How about building a competitive AS autox car( that's legal)?

Being in San Jose, there is a large contingent of XP corvettes in your area. Id call Guy Ankeny for some Penskes, drop a Mast 416 supercharged motor in, ACP carbon body, some of my super top secret a-arms and spindles(should be retail next year).
Of course if you were really going to build a car in your area I'd build a BSPV car and race in the American Autocross Series:
Cant beat a classic wide body

I used to do some serious Solo 2 stuff. Decades ago. I thought it might be interesting to see where the Corvette can win today. These are from the SCCA National Championship.
Super Stock
A Stock
A Street Prepared
That's about it folks.
Now look at some times.
A Street Prepared Corvette - 127
A Modified - 108
Big difference. The one thing I learned back in the day is if you want to win you need to pick a class first. Then pick the fastest car in the class. Picking a car and then trying to make it fast enough to win the class seldom works.

For Autox, oem brakes are way more than enough,
You want a motor and gearing that will pull full thru its entire RPM band and let you stay in 1 gear, prob 2nd gear.
You will want to stay away from any forced induction, a built V8 will make more power than you can use
For exh keep in mind that most clubs and sites have sound limits so a full muffled exh is a must
you will want to be able it use the widest tire you can, without increasing track width. Slicks will grip better than DOT's but need some heat.
You will want to drop all the weight you can, IE no int, carbon fiber body etc

Ok, let's get serious here.
First you have to pick your series and your class class (SCCA or NASA). For a C5 is it a Z06 or not?
If Z06 then build it for either SS, SSP (the old ASP), SSM or XP. XP will be hard to win nationally because the gutted Elises seem to dominate. Stan Whittney had a great C5 in that class but he gave up and sold it...I believe. If I had the money to burn I'd try either SSP or SSM.
If it's a non-Z06 C5 then AS, SSP, SSM or XP. Once again I'd stay away from XP.
How much you want to modify?
No need for anything more than 450HP in autox...that's about all you can use. Try to use the T-56 tranny (C5 Z06), hard to beat second gear in that.
Here's a non specific general overview:
SS and AS. Not much you can do...DA shocks, one bar change, alignment, pads, any muffler from the cat back, air filter change only.
SSP...All the above mods plus you can use whatever wheels and tires you can fit in the stock fenders, Any springs of the same type as OE, Air intake, remove the cats and some other stuff.
SSM...Above plus coil overs, any drivetrain equipment GM makes. All sorts of weight allowances...evil car but up against other evil cars, mostly evil RX7 TTs with all sorts of race engines and huge tires...
XP...just about anything you want to do. Can't touch the firewall and no tube frames.
That should give you an overview. Once you pick the class you can develop the car for the class you want to compete within.
Good luck.

C5Z stock, Hoosier A6's, get autox alignment/corner balance, remove spare tire, jack, etc. Go autox. I don't own one, but have seen a lot of different Vettes and the C5Z is the best autox car out of the box from what I have witnessed over the past several years. A good driver and it is almost unbeatable.

Ok, I forgive you. But I still don't forgive the dealers who keep sending me "free tire rotation" notices....
