Default High oil pressure - should I worry?

I had a Katech KAT-A6390 oil pump installed and now my oil pressure is fairly astronomical - idles hot at around 60+, and over 100psi at WOT. The relief spring was not shimmed. I just swapped the oil pressure sender so I am relatively confident in these readings.

Are these pressures a cause for concern? Car runs fine otherwise and dynos well.

Wow!! That's a lot of pressure

I believe pressure is a consequence of flow and that would be a LOT of flow.

Perhaps a worry about sucking the pan to a low point at WOT???

There will be an expert along any moment!!!

Yeah that's really high. When I installed the original LS4 high-volume pump (52 psi relief spring) in my old Z06 I was 50-52 hot idle and 70s to 80 at WOT. When the car was fully hot on track I never saw below 50 psi. On the current race car I have the later LS4 pump with the lower 42 psi relief spring. I see 40-42 hot idle and 60s to 70s at WOT, never goes below 50psi on track.

Excess pressure can cause an increase in heat and you could possible suck the pan dry if it pumps too much oil up to the heads before it can drain back down. That said the C5 batwing pan and an oil cooler add a good bit of capacity. The cars that actually had issues with the original LS4 pump were F-bodys with a lower oil capacity.

Thanks. Those items you listed are what I am worrying about, just a matter of how much flow is too much for the oil capacity. I am going to call Katech and see what they say as this is not what I thought I was signing up for.

I do have a cooler that takes about 1qt, so I run about ~8+ qts in it.

I would not run it like that. Also, think about all of the energy you are putting into that little pump to pump oil at 100 psi.

My C6z has high oil pressure when cold (around 100 psi.) I never push the throttle hard until the oil is hot-temps are then normal.

Actually an indication that either there is a blockage in the system or there is an anomaly someplace. Find another port to put an independent gauge on to verify it ... preferably a real gauge.

Additionally, the effective lubrication is significantly decreased at that much pressure above normal and you could actually spin a bearing.

I agree with Tim and would not run the car that way, much less at high RPM.

Pumps merely deliver flow (ex. GPM) while restrictions/relief systems in the oil's delivery system yield pressure. Since you said the quoted pressures were taken while the engine (and the oil?) was hot using a reliable pressure sender, I'd go back to Katech and ask them to comment on your oil pressures.

IMHO, 100+ psi is way too high at WOT and indicates a severe restriction somewhere within the oiling system.

Good Luck!

Jason said the flow was too high for stock clearances and to run a 2390.

And thanks for the responses. The other complication is an Earl's ERL 501 thermostat which may be causing havoc. I am going to bypass that and see what happens.

Could the relief spring be stuck in the pump you got? Never heard of a Katech private-labeled pump.
