Default Can an A6 really last a full race?

Most vettes I see racing on A6's are 315's or bigger while I'm limitied to 275's due to PTA rules. I'm very skeptical of this tire lasting a full race because when I ran this tire in TT it was only good for about 3 laps. I never pushed the car to see how much time they actually fell off, I would just do my cool down and come in.

I'm asking this question because so far this year I have been running the BFG R1 and it will last the race but its not quite as fast as the A6. My next race is at Mid Ohio and I would like to be on the tire that I'm going to run at nationals. The decision will come down to wether the A6's fall off to be slower than the R1 which stays pretty consistant throughout the race.

Any PTA vettes racing on smallish A6's out there? How much time do they fall off throughout the race?

Thanks

Michelin has some new race tires coming out (S9H) that are claimed to have a much longer life. Call Daniel at Finspeed for info.

imho, yes, they can and do last for a whole race but can get a little greasy in 90*+ heat!

Before moving to the spec tire class I am in now...ALL the fast guys ran on A6s and did QUITE WELL with them for a race. Now, they replaced them often, which is why I didn't use them, but they were very fast!

I suggest you try the V710.

I assume the Michelins are not DOTs? If so, not an option for PTA.

I run a6's on my c6Z06 in TTU. They will last if you do a few things. They really like to be at about 35 or max 36 psi hot. If you have to push them for a few laps in a race to take a spot you are fighting for, I think if you can back off just a little, let them cool, then you can go hard again. That may seem counter productive in a race. The other thing is really good alignment. When I found the sweet spot in alignment, I can run the same A6's hard for the whole weekend in time trials, and they still look good when I get home. Just my .02 Jerry

255s As were fine in VIR summer heat last year. I've run multiple races on them w/o issue. I run on 245s now and we'll see how they hold up to a race in a few weeks at Road Atlanta. I ran TTA on them on February and March and set a new VIR TTA track record on them in February with a 2:03.65.

Here's the intense battle I had with Michael Smith last December at Road Atlanta. It was warm out and I was running as hard as I could. I was on 255 A6 scrubs and they did fine the whole time.

The trick is to not get 'em greasy...
Once you do you are done...

The races are so fast from the green flag, that if your tires do not have grip right away, you left behind and never catch up.

Just manage the tires a little and you will be ok. If they get greasy, as stated, they are hard to recover.

I have a fresh set of 275 a6’s with one day on them (four TT sessions).
Should I flip them after 1 track day? Or 2? Or?
How many days are they good for?
Thanks!

Check the wear indicators out by the edge. If they are not wearing evenly flip em. I can go 2 weekends before flipin if I dont have a fresh set but I tune my setup for tire wear...

I agree with all of the above and most of your competition will be in the same boat for the second half of the race.

National Qualifiers are only 7-8 laps so its not an issue and it's not out of the question to have a full course caution in the Main.....

The 315's last 1 full weekend longer than the 275's IMO.

I appreciate all of the comments. I think I will give the 275 A6's a try at my next race and see how they hold up. Anybody going to be in PTA at the next Mid Ohio or will I be running ST2 again?

Just like every late restart in CUP - if you don't gain the position BEFORE the 1st or 2nd turn you are done. There ain't no savin' your stuff.

just used a6's for a national race at summit point. Setthe fastest lap of the race in lap 22 of 23... Yes they will last an entire race.
