I am planning on going to a Drivers Edge Event at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson TX but am wondering where there is a good place in DFW to get the tech inspection done. I live is Frisco so preferably in north Dallas or Plano. If anybody knows of a good place let me know.

Send me you e-mail and I'll send you the checklist that I use (MS Excel). Tech inspection is extremely important and most places just give it a quick glance and fill out the form. That's not only a waist of time and money, but it can easily result in an unsafe car on the track at speeds that can reach 150 mph.

I do my tech the day after an event so that I flush out any brake fluid that may have gotten hot and I find any issues that need fixed so that there's no drama immediately before the next event.

You should budget at least four hours for a good tech inspection.

Depending on your run group and the club running the event you may need to have a certified mechanic do the inspection.

Motor Sport Ranch has a pretty comprehensive check list that must be filled out by a certified tech inspector at least at least 30 days prior to the event. I am looking for a certified tech inspector in my area. Thanks for the information though.

Remember you need to prep the car before you get the inspection done. A good inspection will take time as mentioned above but you want to make sure everything is in good shape before you take it in. Otherwise, you will end up paying for somebody to correct the deficiencies which may end up costing you more with parts that you may not have selected.

LG is a good suggestion. They know what to look for although you still need to do your own before taking the car to them.

With Driver's Edge you have the option of conducting your own inspection. If you are not comfortable, it is best to take your car to a shop that is familiar with the stresses the car will see on track. Depending on your location - LG is great (now located in Plano). An alternative is GSS Speed Shop in Carrolton http://www.gssspeedshop.com/Home.

GSS is a NASA tech inspection site. If you print-out the NASA tech form and have it signed by the NASA inspector it is good for most other groups, including Driver's Edge. Cost is minimal. Plus you can run with NASA Texas (next event in June at Harris Hill).

You will enjoy The Driver's Edge - a good group of guys and Cresson is an awsome track.

It is possible to do your own tech inspection but here is the official policy from Drivers Edge:
"Owners with new cars that have less than 15,000 miles and have NOT been in an accident, can inspect their own vehicles"
