Mobile bumped the ZDDP back up as well. The flat tappet universe is once again in Harmony!

Looks like we should be putting the high mileage oil in our low mile Vettes.

You guys don't think 15w is a little stout for an LS motor? Or are using it for TT & WtW stuff?

Not wanting to drift into oil weight thread, there are plenty of those.

I've posted this in one of the other oil threads, but here ya go...

When I took a course at Bondurant in 2004, they were filling their C5s with Mobil-1 15W-50. I asked the shop guys the same question you're posting, seemed like very thick stuff for an LS1.

They said that they had two engines fail shortly after delivery while running Mobil-1 5W-30. Same failure mode in both cases, #4 rod bearing.

GM sent a team to disassemble and inspect the engines, reviewed findings w/ whomever back at HQ, and recommended the 15W-50. No further engine problems.

After that, I started running it for HPDE and Time Trial days. Sent two samples to Blackstone for oil analysis afterward, single-digit wear metal numbers. The second sample was after driving the car from NJ to Memphis TN, two hard days on the road course, and returning to NJ. Averaged 28MPG on the highway, but that was all 6th gear and just jumping on/off for refueling.

I don't run it for daily driver use, but it's the good stuff for road course use.

I haven't run an API SM or SN oil in my LS1 or my truck. Ever.

I went to RedLine 5W-30 after Mobil dropped their zinc/phos for API SM, then switched to Mobil-1 High Mileage 5W-30 when I found the specs.

Perhaps not coincidentally, I have no valvetrain ticking noises either.
