Default Fixed headlights for C5?

Hey guys,

I've researched this but can't seem to find a definite answer.

I'm thinking that fixed headlights, if you remove the motor and all the gears/hardware from the original pop-ups, could be a nice weight-saver in a crucial place on a C5.

How much weight saving can be expected? What is a decent price/quality ratio for a fixed headlight kit? Installation a pain or not too bad?

I'm sure some of you who run HPDE with a streetable car, or some of you who race enduros, may have looked into this already...

Thanks!

Weight savings is marginal... maybe 20lbs. Do it for looks vs. any performance. Now if youre building a race/TT car to class rules then that's different.

The light cannons (check group buys in the FS section) look to be the best (do not affect aero and come with HIDs). $1300. Install looks relatively straight forward.
Prob save around 9 pounds.

I'm making some right now with c6 lights and breathless C5 lenses, I picked them up on ebay cheap. I got one side for 150.00 If you didn't want to mess with making some, The radioflyer makes the best ones using a lens that is flush with the panel like the breathless style. They look like they would be really light.

^ those are the ones from the Radioflyer. What do the stock units weigh with motors and everything seem really heavy, but I never put them on a scale

Very happy with my SLC V2 Fixed headlights from radioflyer.

My car is 99% track driven but once in a while I will have it on the street. these are the only HIDs that have made driving at night pleasurable.

Yeah I'm starting to think that the weight saving is a bit marginal for the cash outlay... Thanks for the info guys!

The stock units are about 20lbs total. I used the cheap Depots and they weigh about 6lbs total. So around 14lbs saved. I only did because one side had a motor issue and the cover was broken. They were on national back order. So I said the heck with it and bought the Depots on Ebay for next to nothing. The car is not a DD so I don't care about the light. Although they are surprisingly good for the price.

I just weighed my stock lights and they were 30 lbs. Well, they weren't really stock. I had ACA's (glass instead of plastic) and everything was in the box when I weighed it, lights, covers, brackets, wiring, and ballasts.

Unfortunately I never weighed my Radioflyer lights before I installed them, but I know they were much lighter.

I would agree with the other estimates that the change from stock or stockish lights to Radioflyer (or similar) lights saves between 10 and 25 pounds.

I paid $1570 for my lights. If you divide that by 20 lbs it costs $78 per pound to save that weight. Not cheap, but as a bonus you get much better lights and better aero compared to when the stock lights would be on/up.

I love mine. Prob a good 25lbs after you remove all the Crap. Got my depos off ebay for 250$ and came with ballasts and hid bulbs. The light output is amazing, plus its nice give able to flash cars on the track for passing.

Don't they hurt the aero a little? Also, you guys keep taking about Depots or Depos but I can't seem to find them... Thanks!

Yeah I'm starting to find a few "Depo" lights. Those are chromed though, but they don't seem chromed on VGLNTE1's picture.

Go to Ebay Motors and in the search box put "depo headlights corvette". You'll see chrome and black. Get the black ones. The lens itself is clear. Mask off where you want the lights to show through. Then paint the top to match your choice of color. I painted mine black. VGLNTE1 painted his to match his car. They are roughly $250 on Ebay.

Thanks a lot, that helped!

So what's installation and reliability like on those? Do I need anything else than what comes from the seller?

also curious about the Depos. I was originally going to go with ACA to retain the pop-up, but those look to be sold out everywhere.

I think the fit is so-so, the install is pretty easy. Have no idea on reliability. Car hardly ever goes out at night. Everything you need is in the lights. Just install them and plug the cable in. If you want really nice that fit great and look great then be prepared to bump the $250 closer to $1250.

Go in the C5 Tech/General section and search on the Depo headlights. There are plenty of comments on them, install info, painting them, etc... The whole C5R fixed headlight thing has been discussed for at least 3 years.
