Default R888's and wear?

How far can you take R888's down to? Almost at the wear bars now.

Down to the cords.

The wear bars are 2/32". The R888 comes with 6/32" of tread, so you're only 2/3 of the way there.

That said, the R888 will heat cycle out before you get there ... so it's your call. They'll still work, but they should get more and more squirrely as time goes on.

Mine usually heat cycle out before I wear them down all the way, but I usually go a little past the wear indicators too.

When I ran them on my track wheels, once you got to the wear bars, they were a handful. I was disappointed in them and haven't run them again.

What are you running if you don't like the R888s? I've been thinking about getting a set for VIR in Sept but maybe not based on your comments. I'm trying to find a R comp that will last longer than the Hoosier R6 (40 wear rating). I ran RA-1s which I really liked last year but they don't make the wider sizes anymore. A lot of guys run NT01 or V710 which I haven't tried yet. I'll save the R6 for time trials but I need a longer lasting track day tire.

I run RA1's or NTO1's. I wouldn't touch an 888 if I got them for free.
RA1's are one of the best tire ever made. not the fastest but you can't heat cycle them out and their best just before their junk. Great tire and the NTO1 is an RA1 carcass.

I did run a BMW two weeks ago with continentals. That was a real wow. What a tire. (shhhh its a Hoosier). Hancook C50's are pretty good also.

100% I had 30 cycles on my R888 before NCM VIR and I paid the price. I learned a LOT about car control with worn out Toyos on the uphill essess that trip.

The R888 is a fantastic tire...and i think that more will agree with that vs disagree. Run them at a proper pressure and they have a ton of grip. They certainly get better also, as they wear. There are many good tires, but these tires are run by many, many people for a reason.
