Ford was driving two of them around Laguna over the weeken at the Rolex Reunion. They were driving them pretty hard from what I could see during lunch and other 'off' times. Looked pretty quick, although I didn't try taking a lap time.

Why do these cars have to weigh 3,871 lbs? Why can't/don't manufacturers put a spectacular drivetrain in great chassis that weighs less than 3,000 lbs? Preferably 2700 lbs or less.

Hp is cheaper the shaving pounds at a certain point.

Which run group? My buddy was 2:34 repeatedly with a passenger (me - 200lb) in blue group. An extra 160hp would have shaved a bit off (on the straights). (so would kicking my fat a$$ out of the car. LOl)

Because consumers wants 10 speaker audio, multi-zone A/C, leather everything, 20"+ wheels, lots of insulation, etc. Add in the safety and EPA stuff like 4+ airbags, TPMS, backup cameras, multiple catalytic converters, all the control modules plus their wiring and we're talking serious heft.

No one is going to buy a completely stripped Vette or Mustang, at least not enough people to cover the costs, and the EPA/safety rules would really hamper their efforts. There's a limit to how far one can go with adding exotic materials and such due to cost. Pop over to the C6 sections and read about the friendly weight-loss competition between Halltech and Jason@Katech to get an idea of what it costs to drop weight and still keep with the modern idea of a normal car. Hint: BIG $$$.

I know but it's just a little frustrating. Great all around performance comes from an exceptional package not just hp alone. This car has a nice power to weight ratio but because it's so heavy it requires you slow it down significantly to get through corners. Power is nice but corner speed lowers lap times. As we all know the combination of both good power and low weight provides the best performance.

Not bad, not bad. A lot of this would depend on the drivers skill. Throw some Hoosiers on there and you could run even better I would guess. However, I can run consistent sub 30's in my near stock C5 Z on Nitto NT555 RII's. So I would hope the new Mustang could be mid 20's, maybe lower.

However, for 2012 everybody's lap times are going to drop from years prior because they haven't moved the turn 1 wall back yet from the 12 hour race. I lost about 10 mph going into turn 1 because of that.
