Best camera placement position for track day?
I just got a gopro2 HD for my Birthday, and I was wondering if you guys have any recommendations on placement? I was hoping to place it so that the HUD is visible. If that's not feasible then any other suggestions?

Here is an over the shoulder view from my Sharkbar taken with my Flip Video Camera last year when I had an engine failure. When played full screen you can see the tach and speedo in the lower left corner and if your display is set up right you can see the tach drop when the engine took a dump. You can see how hard it is to get a good view as the shadows change with the angle of the car in relationship to the sun.

This is from harness bar with $30 wide angle lens. Camera records in 720p 60fps, so when I have it angled more to the left, I can usually read speedo.

I would say on a harness bar or on the inside of the rear windshield. Reason? That way you can watch your hand positions, turning, and shifting as well as the road.

I like the 2nd one in Scott's post (Sperkins). I tired out a helmet camera mount at NARRA a few weeks back and it made for some pretty cool footage. Not super easy to get in and out of my caged car with the helmet on though!

I like to move it around a litle as it adds to the video allot especially when showing the video to non-car people. Keeps spouses, kids, family interested.
Places I typically use are harness bar looking forward, windshield looking back with fisheye setting, front bumper with fisheye, front windshield.

Thanks for all the input guys! Since there's really no way to catch the HUD I think I will mount it on the windshield under the mirror. I don't have a harness bar so that eliminates that spot.

If you are looking for HUD type info, I would look into a traqmate type system.

Sorry I can't post up a shot or video since I can't seem to find one right now, but I mounted my Go Pro on the dash directly above the instruments and it captured the hud perfectly.
I used only the camera with no case and just put it on the dash with sticky backed velcro. The Go Pro is so light that I'm not worried about it flying off in a collision. I just can't see it doing any damage to anyone.
Probably wouldn't be approved by a racing organization but for track days I haven't had a problem.

Here's a Sony HD HandyCam with wide converter right below the rearview mirror:

Same camera and lens attached the back glass with a Gripper 3025 6" suction cup mount. Much more going on and more entertaining to watch since there's a greater sensation of speed:

I've even put this camera on the roof before at a private track rental. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that at a PDX or TT though since it could come off and cause damage to someones car.

I put it on the side of my helmet once...not so good. didn't get the HUD.

IMHO anything inside the car will not as good as outside the car. I recently got a gopro2HD also. under the nose on the right or left for my C6Z is really good, on the roof is also good, get tired of that put it facing the rear. on the front fender (out of the way of flying rocks)
