Default Used HANS?

Now that I'm getting seats/harness I feel it's stupid to not have a hans. Obviously they aren't the cheapest but I do understand the alternative so I get that it's not that expensive in the grand scheme of things. However, what are you guys'/gals' opinions on purchasing used HANS?

thanks,

Call HANS, I remember them saying unless you can see visual damage they are fine. They don't go bad. I know I bought mine used had it for a few years (never needed it) and then resold it.

Thank you. That is excellent pricing. I'm now in the endless debate with my self..."since I don't have a halo seat, would I be better off with a hybrid, for side-impact protection?"

I do appreciate your help!

I bought a used one a couple of years ago and it came in handy when I hit a wall this year at almost 100 mph. You're right, it's stupid not to have one when you have a 5/6 pt harness. Ask yourself how much your safety is worth.

I was actually on grid about to go out on track when that happened.

For racing they need to be recertified after a period of time. That may apply to all uses. Don't remember how long it is, but earlier this year I sent my back. They turn them around very quickly.

I think they have a date on them for expiration....a buddy borrowed mine for a race, so I don't have it sitting here.

When I broke mine in my major wreck last year, the HANS looked fine...it wasn't until I was feeling it at the "base" of the horseshoe--bottom of the "U" at the back of the neck that I felt the hairline crack. That is what saves your life according to HANS when I called. So, I would think they are good unless you feel a crack like that upon careful inspection

Thanks for all the good info! Will only be DE'ing for a while until I can get up the ladder so I don't think I have to worry about re-certification or anything, as long as it is sound equipment. I appreciate your help. Waiting on a couple of pm replies and now trying to decide if I don't need a hybrid device since I don't have a halo seat..but that's a completely different thread...

I've already sent them a pm asking the same and noted it in the thread so I would hope as op I would be first in this particular line? However, since you sent me a contact for seats in another thread I'll let you know that the pictures of the HANS state that it's 300.00.

I would love to see the recertification process.

Open box, yeap, its a HANS, send it back with invoice and new sticker.

Do they do non-destructive testing on them etc. ???

They told me that they do a visual inspection and replace the tethers. They also said that they often replace the rubber on the top surface where the harness sits. The cost of the sticker is fairly cheep....but, you also have to pay for the new tethers, and sometimes new rubber.
