Default C4 rear brakes for road racing

I'm building a C4 for dedicated wheel to wheel road racing with Midwestern Council and selected the Wilwood Forged Narrow Superlite 6R kit for the front which is a 13 inch rotor (the max allowed by our rules).

The complimentary rear kit, however, seems like overkill. It is the 4R version of the caliper also with a 13 inch rotor.

I've been searching this forum for what people run or for alternatives but there isn't much here that I can easily find. (Forum needs to allow Cx as a legitimate keyword)

I'd be interested in what others are running for all out road racing and opinions on the front / rear balance of Wilwood combo.

I see most running the old fronts in the back

Loosing the E-brake in the process.

Running AP's up front and old fronts out back on the 91 Z however the bracket can be pricy. On the 89 we are running Wilwood GN III's up front and stockers out back with no issues. Change to the Camaro MC and a wilwood proportioning valve and you'll be good to go. Not to mention saving you some $$'s

Thanks guys, the J55 fronts in the rear sound like the ticket. Tried to search for a parts list to do this but came up empty. Anyone have the parts list to put the J55 fronts on the rear? Its a 1987.

Also what year Camaro for the MC?

Thanks again.

Most likely I'll be running the C6 Z06 calipers all around on my track car...

There's a link here on the thread that has all the information on how it is done.

My '92 ZR-1 body/frame is without any brakes right now...actually without any running gear at all presently. I plan to get a C6 Z06 as a donor car to get the LS7 and other goodies I want...the brakes will be one of them. That thread above has some good sources for the conversion kit to retain your emergency brake with the C6 Z06 rear calipers. Good stuff!

I've seen a few posts here about tracking a C4 with C6 brakes and they have been all pretty positive...if they don't work out for me I'll upgrade them to StopTech's or C6 ZR1 parts...

Personally...I don't like the loss of the emergency brake going with the J55's in back. The first time a wall is coming at you and your foot goes to the floor I'd be thinking "Why in the he!! did I delete that E-brake for?"

I can say that a friend in the club had the complete C4 Wilwood setup on his car...6-pot fronts and 4-pot rears (with 2-piece rotors) and he let me take it for a lapping session and I was stunned at how hard they stopped the car time & time again. My first 3 laps were re-figuring the brake points because they stopped in 1/2 the distance my stock J55's did.

Good luck...

I am using (and assuming everyone else also) a 4th gen ('93-'02) Camaro master cylinder. They are the same for all the years and utilize a 1" bore as opposed to the 7/8" C4 MC.

I don't think you need it. The proportioning on the Camaro is done by an external proportioning block, not in the MC like the C4. My Camaro MC on the stock J55s felt way better in bias than the C4 MC and DRM spring.

Is the Camaro MC actually separate?

Unlike the C4 one which is only separated by an o-ring

also, are you still running the anti-lock?

Yes it is separate. Here are some pictures of the Camaro MC in my car (not the best views):

Here it is in my Camaro. You can kinda see the lines running to the silver prop block in the front right behind the intake tube.

No I am no longer running ABS.

Who makes the bracket to use the stock fronts on the back? And do you have to upgrade the master cylinder? I run c5 up front and just have my stocks lying around.... and already have a proportioning valve just never got around to installing...

As far as I know two shops sell them:
Doug Rippie
http://dougrippie.com

Melrose
http://www.melroseheaders.com

Neither list them on their websites so you'll have to call them to see if they still sell them. I got mine from Melrose about 6 years ago.

As far as the MC, you don't have to upgrade it, but you may want to. I ran my setup for a year with the stock MC and it was fine, but I wasn't happy with the long pedal travel since the calipers have much more piston volume.
