Default Brake fluid question...

I have a can of ATE blue brake fluid, 90% full, that I opened once briefly @ 4 yrs ago & it's been sealed up tight as a drum in my garage ever since...is it still any good or should I dump it?

It should be useable, but whatever air was in the container will have contributed moisture to the fluid, so keep that in mind

EDIT: was looking further into this since I bought the same stuff recently - (have a local shop that sold srf and motul 600 a year or two ago... now only sells ate)

apparently ate only recommends keeping the fluid for a year after opening.

aside from that, for unopened stuff there should be a date on the lower side of the back of the can

I would dump it, a higher boiling point BF has a tendency to absorb more moisture. Even if you had the lid on tight, moisture is evasive and I am sure has seeped into the container. Rather than run the risk of putting in bad fluid and have pedal issues into a stint on the track, for the 20$ get some Willwood or Motul 600 deg. fluid and call it a day.

Thanks for the input guys...good risk vs; reward....think I'd better go new Motul 600 dot 4, just hate to waste stuff.

Use it for a fluid change in your old beater Neon.

I used some old (sealed) brake fluid in my clutch system & almost ruined the seals because the fluid became "corrosive" to the seals somehow. After we did forensics on it, we determined it was 10 yr old fluid, there was no way to determine that on the metal can. It was never opened.

There is a thread for those interested & I think I did a video if you ck below.
