In a sideways crash like that, I'm not sure just how much help a HANS device is. It's developed more for a frontal impact, but I guess it's better than nothing.

I think a better seat with 5 point harness would have helped..... anyway..food for thought

Completely agreed. You don't need a harness and a seat until you need a harness and a seat.

Yep, every time I see a sideways crash, I appreciate the NASCAR seats I see in those cars more and more. Those things are built to take hits in about any direction.

Man, I thought he was going to break his thumbs/wrists on impact, but he looked straight at the wall causing him to instinctively raise his arms to protect himself. Pretty lucky.

The only reason I am alive today is my HANS and full containment RaceTech seat in place for my 2011 crash. I snapped the carbon fiber HANS and the tethers made the back of my brand new helmet into mush. I also broke the head restraint "wings" on my RaceTech seat. I did approximately 4 barrel rolls and 4 end over end flips at over 140 MPH. I LOVE safety equipment!!!!!!

So what pulled him to the left on brake-in? Soft suspension up front, or poor brake bias?

edit: nevermind, I should learn to read. The page says oil on the track.

I didn't see any surface flags. Could have been trailing throttle oversteer.

His motor seems to get quiet just before, you think he was lifting early?

Still the "report" is of oil on track, regardless of flagging.

Seems to lose control the moment he lifts, doesn't it? Definitely would feel like oil if you didn't know what TTO was.

I'm sure he was stunned/shaken up, but I was really surprised at how quickly he got out of his car, since there was no evidence of fire that would force a quick evacuation.

Yeah,

I thought they had tamed that out of the later p cars. But I guess you never get 100% out.

I agree it would feel the same if you don't know what tto is.

With the short sleeves & the way he jumps out to face an active track I would guess not too many days at the track.

If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say his "support" race shop (if that's what Vivid Racing is?) might also want to blame it on oil rather than a car not set up right. I have no info on that aspect at all, just that the shop/business is mentioned in the article. Wonder if anyone at Vivid Racing reads this forum & has details?

If it was really oil on the track, I don't think I would want to be outside the car as there were other cars on the track. He could have gotten ran over.

I also noticed he applied the e-brake before getting out....that showed he really was a beginner...

I was just waiting for another car to come barreling at him. So another vote for no oil.

You might want to take a closer look at the video. At the 28 second mark to 30 second mark there is a streak that is lined up directly under right side of his car. If you look close you can see were the streaks go to the right side of the track. His car went left which tells me the left had grip and the right did not that caused the car to pull to the left. I say there was oil on the track are some other fluid. That guy did nothing wrong.

I think "hit oil" was an excuse to save face. It's pretty clear from the audio that he snaps off the throttle as he enters the brake zone and he wasn't able to correct the resulting condition. If his feet are as jerky as his hands, then I'd guess that's what happened.

This is how the 997 should be driven:
