Default Tire choice help, moving up from a Nitto NT-05

I finally think I am "tire" limited. I have been the NT-05 for over 2 years, about 10 or so events.

I will keep the 275-40-17 sizes as I have 2 sets of track wheels.

The car is a 99 Z28, around 3800 lbs with 385rwhp(ls6 powered). It's a full on street car. C6 brakes with cooling ducts, Koni shocks, 550/150 springs. Raybestos ST47/43 pads.

As with most I am looking for more speed with value.

Which tire?

NT-01
R888
R6
RA1

I can buy used R888's and R6's for $145 each shipped.

Input on what I should move to next?

my wife has been using NT01's on our car out on Barber and Rd ATL for a couple of years now. Those suckers stick like glue, and the 315/30's last a long time, with -2.9 degree camber up front and a tire rotation at the end of the first day. I think she has 4 weekends on the current set, maybe 5 weekends, and they are still in great shape.
I think we met you at Rezoom this past weekend. She was in a black C5 Z with pink numbers

Hoosier R6 scrubs will be the fastest but I wouldn't run them on the street, unless you have a reasonably short drive to/from the track. I have driven Kumho V710 and BFG R1 to/from tracks that are about an hour away from me with no issues, but wouldn't do much more than that.

I wish I could find these as "used takeoffs" like I can the R888 and R6.

Was nice meeting you guys, she was moving in the Z for sure.

I don't know whether I need to move up in a tire, get pro coaching or both. This was my first event with some REAL(1.9 degrees) camber in the car and I am not quite used to it yet. And I finally found some BAD *** brake pads that do the job in that barge and last a little while.

I know I will never do it this as a pro, BUT I do want to see just how quick my car will go. Very very few run my type of car on track and it's fun to say the least, especially for the money.

Keep the suggestions coming, I am all ears.

If you can get scrub R888s, I'd do that. A school isn't a bad idea either.

I bought the Nitto NT555RII Extreme Tires. They come in 285 and 305 sizes for 18" wheels.

I street drive with them, and drove to Summit Point and VIR on them, even drove 2 hours in the rain (not that much fun though).

They are about as good as an RA1/NT01 I believe. I think they are the perfect track day tire. Normal street tires dont have nearly enough grip, but Hoosiers have a bit much for stock bushings, brakes, oiling, etc. Not to mention you don't want to drive to the track on Hoosiers.

Did you time yourself on the same track with the tires?

Probably 5 seconds on a 2 minute track. I was able to take some of the higher speed turns 10 mph faster and the nt01's are much more predictable and less sensitive to tire pressure.

Couldn't agree more. NT01s ( IMO) last way longer than 888s, ( just check with the NASA guys in Spec Miata and American Iron why they are back on RA-1s as a spec tire and didn't stick with 888s) Be aware that Toyo tire owns Nitto and can change the NT01 compound any time they want.

Hoosiers start degrading after the first heat cycle and buying used ones really depends on how many heat cycles they have had.

I believe Kumho V710s are only good for 16-18 heat cycles according to the manufacturer. ( would also be my experience)

You won't go wrong with the NT01s.

There is a new Hankook KD but I don't know anything about them or if they are even available in Corvette sizes.

Few thoughts:
1. There are many good HPDE coaches, ask in advance to make sure you get a good one. I dont think pro coaching is worth the investment.

2. Used tires are great if you are willing to spend the time finding, mounting, and changing them.

3. If your brake set up is barely adequate now, it will be unacceptable with R6's. You are going to generate a good amount more heat which will shorten pad life and work your calipers hard.

I have run a 315 in 18 inch diameters at all 4 corners ( square setup)

The car is quite neutral but it is likely too much front rubber for a faster track due to the rolling resistance.

The best tires for the track that I have found are Hoosier R6's...they cost about $1,600 before shipping and mounting.

Here is a better alternative...scrubs from the GrandAm series.

they cost about 25% of what R6's do.

Here is where you get them...(copied and pasted from an email)

GT Racing Tires / GT Track Days
Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday
sale!

C7 Race car
Save 15% on any tire order through Monday 12/2/13.

GT Racing Tires has a great selection of race scrubs in stock, Pirelli, Hoosier, Continental, Michelin and more.

Friday through Monday save 15% on any tire order. Why spend $1,500.00 on a new set of tires for track days or testing when you can get a set of scrubs starting at $50.00 per tire plus S&H. Our tires have no more than three heat cycles with 75% or better rubber remaining.

Our first event at Road America in 2014 will be July 21-22.etails coming very soon.

We look forward to seeing you at the track

First weekend on the BFG R1's, car has tire chatter in the really tight stuff when the car tends to push.

Any fix for this?
