Default Great Field for GT group at HSR Daytona (race review)

The group 9 (Modern GT) Sunday HSR race had a great field, with 25 cars qualifying at 2:00 or under. The pole was a 1:46 by Carlos De Quesada in the Alegra Motorsports Jaguar XK8R Trans Am car. Simon Gregg was about a second back in the Derhaag Motorsports Corvette. There were two Oreca type Vipers out there, a former factory C6R Corvette, the ex Machavern GT-1 Falcon, the ex Machavern GT-1 Corvette, JC France in the fastest Nascar Cup car I have seen on the DIS road course. (1:51). Lance Wilsey, Cory Friedman and Nigel Greensall in some very quick Porsche 997 Cup Cars. Our team driver and V8 Series regular Bobby Kennedy ran as high as eighth in this fast field in the Bemco Camaro cutting some 1:54's in a car that is really little more than a Trans Am TA2 type. In the opening laps Bobby passed the ex factory C6R and the ex David Donohue Viper GTS-R and was challenging multi time European Racing champion Nigel Greensall (Porsche 997 GT3 Cup) for position. On the last lap Bobby had to go off in the bus stop to avoid hitting the Viper. This resulted in the splitter getting torn off and the nose damaged and dragging on the track. Bobby had to go to pit road, relegating him to a 16th place finish. Squeak Kennedy drove our Corvette and moved up about 10 spots in the opening laps despite a miss that got worse as he went. (plug wire falling off). At the end Squeak dragged the Vette across the line with it only able to pull about 5500 rpm.

Finishing order (top ten)

1. Carlos De Quesada Jaguar TA type 1:46
2. Simon Gregg Corvette TA 1.47
3. Florent Moulin Viper GTS-R 1.49
4. Doug Richmond Falcon GT-1 (Riggins Eng.) 1:52
5. Robert Blain Corvette C6R (ex Corvette Racing) 1:50
6. JC France Ford Taurus Nascar Cup 1:51
7. Lance Wilsey Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 1:52
8. Corey Friedman Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 1.52
9. Nigel Greensall Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 1:53
10. Oliver Bouquet Dodge Viper GTS-R (ex David Donohue) 1:52

Bobby Kennedy wheeling the "lovely" BEMCO Camaro at Daytona during the modern GT Sunday HSR race. Best lap 1:54. This is a Howe ASA/GTA type chassis that has always been a road race car. Originally built by Woody in 2005 for me and Squeak Kennedy, it then had the ASA Monte Carlo body. Powered by a Byron Koury dry sump LS6.
