how to get racing license?
I started tracking about 5 yrs ago, at local track in jersey and got "license" to race on their little track... then I moved to Germany, and been really hitting up tracks around here (over 100 laps on nurburgring, with 7:45 best), Nring GP, Spa, hockenheim... been offered seat time from some teams, but always needed a racing license... since I never knew how long i'd be here in Europe for, I didn't get it (it's about 1k euros to get basic one). So now in may I will be coming back to the states (cali, right near laguna seca), and from my understanding I need some sort of racing license, or be part of groups... Can someone point me in the right direction?
Here are a few vids from 2 months ago.
p.s. is there a way to make money racing in the states? or have someone sponsor tires and brakes? here in Europe you have to pay out of pocket for all (when I was offered seat time, it was about 7k euros per race in gt3 Porsche), and you really have to be high up the food chain to have any of your spending recouped.
guy i'm chasing was just given seat time at vln in a gt3. that m3 is fully built track car:kw3, BBK, cage, no interior, gt3 spoilers, mpsc tires, akra exhaust and tuning, dct tranny, and he was all out here and as u can tell I was holding back(only mods are cai, and bilstein. tires mpss)

If you are doing track days, you shouldn't need a license to run Laguna or Sears Point. If you want to run with a club, say SCCA or NASA, in wheel to wheel racing, you will need to get licensed by one or the other. Pretty sure you can race one group with the other's license with permission. Go to scca.com or nasaproracing.com and look up their licensing requirements.
I have an SCCA license that I got 20 years ago and kept it current. I had to supply the car, built to SCCA safety rules, and had to go to a 3 day licensing event.

For $1500 you can rent a Spec Miata and get your novice license:

This is one of a number of NorCal companies that will rent or provide arrive and drive services for track cars.
Track-Masters keeps a pretty good list, but I'm not sure how current it is:

After you get the novice license you'll have to complete 3 race weekends (I believe within the same calendar year) to be granted a full competition license. NASA will honor the SCCA full competition license with appropriate paperwork and membership fees.

You certainly don't need a racing license if you're not going to run competitively - you can run track day events without it.
However, if you want to run club races, TT events, or buy rides in other racing series, as mentioned above there are many ways to get a racing license - and here are two of the best:
