Bedding brakes

More or less, you don't on a race car. That is why it is common for someone to select their favorite pad and compound and then never switch.
If you are not willing to blow a practice session early in the morning by dragging the brakes as best you can while staying out of the way and then coming in early to let them set and cool, then you just live with the lowered life of slapping them on, dragging the brakes on the pace lap (or turning off your fans), and then letting it rip into T1 at the drop of the green flag.

Yes, Carbotech street pads do not require bedding and the XP series can be purchased pre bed so you don't loose a session. XP series bedding instructions below.
Proper bedding instructions for AX-Series & XP-Series Compounds :
1. All new brake pads require a bedding process, start this process by pumping your brakes a few times to assure proper installation. Once on track perform several moderate (medium) near stops (to a very slow rolling speed) to thoroughly warm up the pads and rotors. This should take 1-2 laps. This allows a thin layer of the pad material to be transferred into the micro-grooves of the rotor.
2. After the pads/rotors are warm, perform a series of hard near stops (to a slow rolling speed) until some brake fade is felt. This process should take about 2-4 laps (depending on the track). Once this occurs, then stay off the brakes (as much as possible) and bring your car into the pits/paddock to completely cool. Do not lock the tires during this operation.
3.Allow brake pads and/or rotors cool down to ambient temperatures; no less than 30 minutes. The total bedding procedure should not take more than 5-6 laps or about 10-15 minutes.
NOTE: The proper way to bed your brake pads and brake discs (rotors) is to bed them on the racetrack, NOT on the street (excluding the Bobcat 1521 compound).
Warning: Failure to properly bed in your pads could lead to friction material to chunk and break up resulting in poor pad performance and pad life. Improper bedding can also lead to overheating your pads and causing them to glaze over resulting in the car not being able to stop or slow properly.

Now when you do new rotors, you should bed those in no matter which pad you are using. Typically a good few medium to hard stops from 70 will take care of this, let them cool without using the brakes and you should be good to go.

If you do not need a helmet, than I would say ok. But, 3 20 min session sounds like a low speed HPDE. I would go easy so, you do not glaze the pads. If you do glaze them they will need to be sanded down.

Thread "unjacked"
back to the post topic...
When I change pads at the track...just don't seem to think track pads need bedding...they need to be warmed up, like they do with every session.
I do make sure they seat with the rotors and do some hard braking on the warm up lap.

I would like to eventually do some track days. If I were to go with xp10/xp8's just how loud will they squeal ? I live about an 1:45 min drive to Sebring ? I saw that they can also be ordered pre- bed , what would the total price be ? Thanks for all your help. my vette is an 08 base Z51 , on non- flats

OP, here is another reference point for "when and where". My car is street legal which makes this a little easier for me but you could still pull this off with a little extra work and not waste any time at the track. I have an '11 Z07 with CC brakes and they must be properly burnished otherwise they don't work well at all. I've found an industrial park not far from my home where none of the businesses work evening shifts. I wait until 10:00PM on a Friday or Saturday night and just rip around the service road at the industrial park. I'm there for about 15 minutes in total; 0 - 60 -0, fifty times as quickly as i can per the owners manual. (It actually turns out to be 10 mph to 60 or 70 mph and back to 10 mph. I just leave the car in 2nd gear.) This location and procedure has never failed me.

I have to bed some new pads and rotors this weekend. There is a bus stop/park&ride near me that has a giant paved lot. I'm going to try that out.

I made two videos on this topic in my C5 Z06. You don't need to break laws to get it done. Check them out, and hopefully this helps.
