Granted Randy Pobst was driving, but a 1:36??? On a cold track???
To put that in perspective, Nasa TT1 cars run mid 1:30's at Barber.
The Aix record there is a 1:41.
Also a stock Boss 302 ran a 1:40?
..... I need their timing equipment.

I am very impressed, but that is a lot of power.
I set the ST3 lap record with a 1:36 and Scott set the TT3 lap record with a 1:34ish in 9.5:1, full aero cars on well used Hoosiers (both of us).
For a 7.5:1 car on street tires, that is not a bad time at all.

Impressive times at Barber for a 3800 lb car. That new suspension system is trick. The 3.91 gears, Pirelli's, and a pro driver also help. 1.36 is a comparable time to a stock C7 with full aero I saw driven by a pro driver at Barber this last Feb.

I haven't seen the Hot Rod article, BUt it is the same test and story in today's Autoweek. The story mentions that the 136.29 lap is just slightly slower than "the Fastest lap a GS class Camaro GS-R recorded afound Barber in the Continental Tire Challenge of 1:36.02."
Obviously, the Street Z28 with the addition of Continental spec slicks would be considerably quicker than the REAL GS-R racecar (although the Z has a few more CID, probably about the same HP and torque).

I can't swallow that time, even if you put it in a chocolate bar.
I was at Barber on March 2, 2013 with PCA, temp was the same, mid 30's and there were snow flurries that morning.
That track was like glass all day, no sun shining just like in their pictures in the article.
Sorry, I know I am slow, and Pobst is a pro driver....but a 1:36? Come on now....
The 1:40 for the Boss is even MORE shocking, and they said it lacked in braking.

As long as there is no ice on the track surface, there is nothing wrong with that time. I've driven to Barber through a snow storm to a PCA event, it was in 2008 I think, got there, and snow still covered all of the grass and the track was wet and icy. Everyone skipped the first sessions for their groups. Soon after the sun came out, the snow/ice melted and the track was as good as ever. Car made good power. My car was 3700 lbs at the time with driver and 600hp on bald MPSC and I ran a 1:39. The new surface is about 2 seconds quicker and Randy is a beast of a driver in a fast car on what are considered the fastest DOT street tire out there. Certainly possible IMO. In fact I think the conditions were MORE beneficial in these conditions as a big heavy car can still get heat in the tires.....
I have been on that track in the cold, it's not fun.

I know Randy is seriously quick and the Z28 is a trick machine, but I'm also surprised/skeptical of the 1:36 (and the 1:40 for the Mustang). At the end of the day this is a 4000lb (with driver) street car, that's not on race rubber.

Oh, well
Let's face it: This Z/28 treatment is what we should be getting on the new Z06, but with a dual clutch manual. I know we haven't seen the new Z06 in action and this has been debated over and over--don't want to start again--but we track guys need a lean, stripped, track rat, N/A, from-the-factory Corvette, devoid of anything but go-fast goodies.... The specs on the new Z06 belong on the next ZR1, if there is one....
Still, a very impressive showing for the new Z/28.

completely agree!! the new Z06 is a bit too much... I wish they came out with a C7Z06.R.. stripped, NA, light, with lots of cooling, aero and solid brakes...

+1 A lot of people say that a track rat isn't in the cards due to the demand being small, but seems like a popular idea to me. I've said it many times before, the easiest way for GM to please everybody is to make more stuff OPTIONAL! Then you could order one with nothing but the performance goodies and leave off all the frills. But I guess then all the gadget guys would ask why they can get their tech stuff standard on BMW, Mercs, etc. but not on the Vette!

Agree, a limited production (500 units) "ACR" type corvette would rule the world. GM has been sleeping on this for a while. However IMO the LS7 was no robust enough during the C6 generation to support being a dedicated track car. Hopefully it stands up in the Z28. And now with a supercharger it would kind of be a contradiction. It is very odd that GM hasn't done one in Corvette form just yet.

Well, believe it guys, that Z28 also beat a new Turbo S Porsche and a Track edition 2014 GTR, driven on the same day by Pobst!! That's truly incredible for a Camaro. Motortrend also has the story (3-way comparo) online, originally a couple days ago.
I too am bummed that the new z06 doesn't follow the z28's as well as it's own footsteps...I wanted to see another light-weight, NA high-revving V-8, with a trick F1 suspension, and huge carbon brakes vette carry on the z06 tradition. I'm sure the c7z will fly, but we'll all see soon enough.
