Default BFG Rival Tread Separation/Delamination

One of the BFG Rivals on my C5 Z06 (stock wheel size) started falling apart on its 5th track day. I turned a few more laps during day number 6 but the tire got a lot worse, fast.

I have heard of the Rival delaminating in Chump Car settings (http://forum.chumpcar.com/index.php?...38#entry148836), but I didn't expect it on my car which has plenty of camber and used for turning just a few hot laps at a time

Setup: 255/17 front tire, -2.0* camber, mid-30s psi hot pressure, non-abusive driver

After 5 track days:

After 6 track days:

The other front tire also showed signs on the sidewall of getting ready to unzip, but it stayed together. Both front tires show signs of the outside inch of the tread face getting quite melty. I have run the Kumho XS, Hankook RS3 and Yokohama AD08 on the car and none of them ever had a problem (10+ track days out of the RS3).

Maybe they need .5 degree more camber than the other tires. Or they may require a few more pounds hot pressure. Checking tire temps after a few hot laps might show what is going on.

I tend to agree, especially about the camber. I thought -2.0* would be more that fine (I used that much with the notoriously floppy RS3 and it worked well), but despite them appearing to be a stiff carcass it seems the sidewall of the Rival really doesn't accept any abuse.

I agree with Bill, also what is the tread depth when they come out of the mold?

You may want to flip them on the rim after a certain number of laps/days.

I think they start with 7/32, currently they are 3/32 to 2/32.

Not sure how viable flipping would be since they seem fine until they're not (when the tread comes unglued at the sidewall). Moot point for me, will be going back to some of the other 140+ TW tires, all of which I have had better luck with.

Too low air pressure/lack of camber.

What is your starting air pressure?

I did that to a few sets of different tires starting the pressure too low and no waiting for it to come up.

Just like the old BFG days...not enough pressure and not enough neg camber. With that said, there are better R comps with similar TWR's that hold up a lot better without having to resort to max neg camber.

Could also be 'cause you drive the sheit out of your car Lloyd!

Probably about 30 cold, low 30s luke warm. I warm up and cool down slowly and gradually.

That said, the compound on the tires is not really great when it is hot.
