Thoughts and prayers to the family of the instructor killed yesterday at Summit. He was a great guy and good friend who will be missed by many.
Rest in Peace my friend

Just got an email on it. Are there that many trees around the track? Nevermind, found a map and it does look as though there are many trees close to the track. RIP.

This gentleman was my instructor last month at Pocono. He was a very fine, kind, patient man and a great instructor. The world in general, has lost a good person. My sincerest condolences to the family.

What a tragedy. Thoughts and prayers for the families. This should not ever happen during hpde or hyperfest sessions or even race sessions for that matter.

Prayers sent
I admire the bravery of all you instructors out there - - to get in a car intending to go at speed with someone you usually meet for the 1st time is some find of special courage

So very sad to hear and unfortunately serves as a reminder to all of us what can happen on track. Does anyone have any more details on how it happened? I have attended Pocono for the last 4 years as well.

I know this tragedy strikes a cord with all of us; anybody that competes or runs HPDE, and particularly those who instruct are impacted. As the OP, I would request that this thread not evolve into a discussion of particulars that none of us has any first hand knowledge of. For the sake of the family and in memory of this individual, please, lets not turn this into a hypothetical discussion or analysis of circumstances, causes, or other particulars of this incident.

PM a mod and get it locked = best solution.

I disagree. This sport is risky. The cause and circumstance around all events such a this should be dissected and the info shared.
It is only with detailed disclosure can we all assess many things such as:
Do we wish to instruct?
What kind of car was it?
Which track and turn? Is there a safety problem there to be addressed by the track and officials?
What safety equipment was in the car and did it work or fail?
I could go on and on, but it is only through this disclosure can we make informed decisions as we embark on 150 mph adventures/racing. There is far too much secrecy around all of these tragedies.
These incidents can be discussed in a respectful and informative manner if we are mature and seek to learn and not judge.

... always hate the sanctimonious replies when tragedies like these happen. It's an autocrossing and road racing forum... reverence should be given and always has been in my 25 years, but to expect it not to be digested and discussed... please.
