How to clean out a helmet
Hey all,
I have a Bell Sport helmet, just the basic cheap o SA2012 model.
I sweat ALOT when driving. In just 15 track sessions my helmet has nasty white sweat marks all over the inside. Is there a way to clean these? It doesn't look like the inside comes out.....

that is a good question... My passenger puked in my extra helmet last weekend. I am thinking of just chucking it now but if I can clean it I may just do that.

Clorox wet naps work well.
Wipe it down with a wet rag, then scrub the hell out of the liner with a wet nap, then wipe it down again with a wet rag. Then give it a once over with a dry towel and set it where it will air dry.

Back in my Navy flying days, we got felt helmet liners to soak up the sweat. I tried to get some, but the cheapest I could find was $25.00 each for what we considered a disposable item.
I went online and found Sweatvac skull caps for $16.00 apiece. I got a couple. After a hot session I just soak them with water, wring them out and let them dry. My helmet doesn't get wet at all.

I have a Bell Sport too. I usually clean both my helmets with a mix of baby shampoo and water. Use it liberally and rinse it out well. Set it aside to dry (takes a day or so) and it looks like new inside. I've cleaned my helmets with this mix many times and it works well. It's also how Bell recommends cleaning their helmets.
AND, jcsperson has the right idea. Get a helmet liner. I get mine from Shampa.

I've got a Bell with a fixed liner and simply put it in the utility tub with some warm water and clothes detergent and use my fingers to work it into the fabric. Let it soak for a bit and then thoroughly rinse it with cool/cold water and turn it right side to dry. You can use a nappy towel to blot most of the water from the liner to aid in drying. If you don't have access to a deep tub, you can use an old 5 gal drywall bucket.
