Cost of a cage?

As well as your input! Compromises everywhere but this 25 lbs will have to come from elsewhere. Keep us posted on the build...I will do the same!

So how did the build turn out? Mine is done and painting it today. What a pain to tape up, over 7 hours!! Turns out we used 51.5' of 1.75x.120, 9.5' of 1.5x.095, and 3.5' of 1.5x.065. Estimated with other materials the weight came up to 145 lbs -150 lbs.

One thing to consider when calculating weight is how each sanctioning body views it. I know that's NASA takes the weight of the car dry, PLUS the actual weight of the driver. I believe SCCA takes dry weight and then adds an arbitrary weight (180lbs) to that.
Honestly..... I can't think of any reason to build a cage out of smaller tubing....especially in NASA where you are on a power to weight formula. Unless you are grossly underpowered to begin with you can always tweak or tune a few extra HP. It not worth compromising your safety.

Mine is getting done right now and ended up using 1.75x.120 tubing. I will post update pics once I get them. The car is being built by Mark the Roll Cage Guy in Akron, OH. Hope to have it ready in two weeks.

What padding did you get and where did you get it from? What sections should be padded? Approximately, how much padding (in linear feet) is required?

The cage is being done as we speak by Mark McMahan in Akron, OH (rollcageguy.com). Here are a few shots of the early stages of the build. It will incorporate nascar style door bars on both sides and is designed to satisfy both NASA and SCCA rules.

Good to see the progress! No padding as of yet but I had my builder push the bars out pretty far so the only locations I am planning on padding will be were I can reach the bars with my helmet on. I will see if I can resize a few to put up.

I just ordered 18 linear feet of high density padding online and should have it ready to install, once I have the car back next Thursday. I will post more pics of the build as soon as they are sent to me.
Please do post your pictures. I am really curious to see what yours looks like.
This is the layout I am shooting for (but with nascar style door bars on both sides) once done:

Looks great! Very tight and spacious. I will have a crossbar in the dash as well, but it looks like the dash doesn't need to come out. The glovebox however, will have to go.
I do like the window net and will have attachment points welded in as well.
Did you have a kill switch mount done as well? How easy is it to get in and out over the door bars?
Do you have a way to put the side glass on for when in transit? I have an open trailer, so that is a must, and Mark will weld those in.

No kill switch yet, did not want to add the cable right now. I have a welder and will add it when I am ready. I had my builder move the door bars a little lower than he usually would but it is still a PITA getting in and out! I have both enclosed and open depending on weather and distance to event. Would be nice to rig something up to hold the glass in while washing though. LOL, just noticed my tech inspector in the bottom photo inspecting the door bars!!

Ty: Looks great. Exciting stuff. Where are you installing the winch to hoist my fat, old, dead *** out of the passenger window for my ride-alongs?
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Good question. I thought that your nurse would be taking care of it for you?
