found a pretty good deal on a 16' x 6.5 open trailer ... has anyone used this size to tow a C5?

I think it would be good. My choices were 15' and 18' from Econotrailer, so I went with the 18'. I've seen c5s on a 15' and it seems too tight to me. 18' is almost too long but I do have room to move the car to balance the trailer depending on what I have loaded in the truck at the time.

I don't think it's wide enough. The length should be fine but you will have to be extra careful loading on a 6.5 width.

Here is a pic of the side clearance of my Mustang on a 18x7.

Here is a pic of my 03Z on a 18x7. I think it was almost touching the right hand fender in this pic.

I have a 16 ft trailer that I have been using for the last 20 years. It is a wood bed trailer with a beaver tail for the last 3 ft, it has 10 ft long ramps and the bed is high enough the car doors open without requiring a removable fender. It also has 4 wheel brakes which are absolutely necessary. Don't let the trailer dealer (like the ones at Carlisle) sell you a cheapy with 2 wheel brakes.

I have a little over a foot of space at the front and the rear fascia rides slightly in front of the rear of the bed. I had the dealer add a tire rack and stone guard at the front. The nose of the car is slightly under the tire rack. My C4, C5s, and C6Z all fit well.

You don't need to get fancy with a trailer. This one is basically a heavy duty commercial grade piece and it has held up well. These pictures were taken about 6 years ago and it looks pretty much the same now.

Total weight as shown with a full tank of gas in the car is 5500 lbs.

Bill

I have a 16' metal deck with beaver tail. It does the job but when loaded the rear tires are right on the crease for the beaver tail. Since day two I have wished I'd gotten the 18'. The Vette has a 105" wheel base. Many cars are longer than that. I put an M3 on there and the rear tires were on the downside of the beaver tail. A Mustang would be the same. To me a 18' is just a lot more versatile.
