GT-1 Pics From The Runoffs
I was down there crewing on a Spec Miata - while I didn't have too many opportunities to watch much qualifying or racing action, there was no way I was going to be at Laguna Seca and not catch at least one GT-1 session from the top of the corkscrew!
Gotta love the C4 still out playing with the Big Boys!
The winner.

Yup! Kyle Kelley the winner. After several years of trying and some years ending with hard luck he finally earned the title of GT1 National Champion.
Kyle also had one of the most exciting races of the weekend in his T2 Corvette. He lead for 17 laps and came in second by only .047 seconds, the fifth closest SCCA Runoffs finish since they started computer timing. Here is that race at minute 4:20 of the video feed. It is worth watching. Start at hour/minute 4:20 at this link:

pics. The C4 brings back memories. I used to crew on a GT-1 3rd Gen Camaro back in the late 90s. Fun times. We used to run a against a yellow C4 out of South Carolina.

They are all tube frame custom cars with just a body on it to look like a C4 C5 C6 etc. But like mentioned, the knowledge of suspension geometry, chassis stiffness, engines, has all been growing since the C4 hayday.

The C5 and 6 are close(er) in wheelbase and track to each other than the C4. You can't just re-body a C4 bodied GT1/TA car without stretching the frame (or cutting down the body, but then you're in SPO).

The C4 we ran against was tube frame but did have a independent rear in the same style as a factory C4. When I asked the guys on our team, you could run a independent rear if the car came from the factory with one.
Are the Trans Am based C5s running a solid axle or independent?
I just thought it was to see the C4, brought back memories.

You can run a factory based chassis, but it is tough to get down to minimum weight and if we are talking Corvette's you would have to pack an SB2 in there to remotely be competitive. The only LS motor allowed currently is an LS1 with stock intake and throttle body at 2580#.

SCCA banned IRS on TA and GT1 cars in 1990, the car had to be built before then to be grandfathered.

Good information. Didn't know this stuff and I appreciate the responses and clarification. I have always loved watching them run but didn't know much about them. Thanks! Good pics too. Wish I had had the opportunity to go in person.
