All of the auto manufacturers have "science project" cars. Saw a few when I did some work in Auburn Hills at (what is now) FCA. If GM does build a mid-engined car, I am extremely doubtful that it would be called a Corvette. Perhaps bring the Fiero back? The first pass was parts-binned to death; this is their chance to make it what it should have been.

2016 Chevy El Camino is coming for the best future car for all people in the world. Every day we are easy to find new cars with new specification and features. We must know the best car that we must buy and before we buy certain car, it is good for you to check the car review so you will get pros and cons of car before you buy. How about new Chevy El Camino?

I'm not seeing enough room for a small block, transmission, and rear end in that area.
My guess is if GM does a mid engine car, it's not going to come with a V8, and it's not going to come with a Corvette name. I'd expect turbo 4, MAYBE turbo 6 power. It won't be anywhere near as fast as a Corvette, and it will probably be cheaper. I would not be surprised if it was a turo4 car priced around the range of the Camaro SS, with ~300hp. It might be a Buick or Cadillac too (they seem to still think people don't view those as old people cars and keep trying to push the point... but they're wrong cuz those are old people cars), and it might try to be a budget alternative to the Alfa 4C, Porsche Cayman, Lotus Evora, etc.

GM has been taunting us with a mid engine Corvette since the 60's. It's never panned out. The closest they ever came is the Fiero. Lets hope our luck holds out.

Also reference the Ford EcoBoost DP cars that ran TUDOR last year. I'm sure most of what was learned there will be used in these new cars.
The ACO has defined limits and requirements for the LM GTE category to ensure that cars are legitimately production-based. The car must have "an aptitude for sport with 2 doors, 2 or 2+2 seats, opened or closed, which can be used perfectly legally on the open road and available for sale."[1] The ACO modifies its regulations for “Small manufacturers” (less than 2000 cars produced a year). In order to be eligible a big manufacturer must produce at least one car a week or a small manufacturer one car a month. The cars will be eligible to race when 100 road cars for big manufacturers or 25 road cars for small manufacturers are produced. The car must have an official launch campaign and sales network. The engine must be used in a production car; while this is usually the engine from the road car, the ACO has made exceptions for cars like the BMW Z4 GTE which use engines from other models. Carbon fiber, titanium and magnesium are banned except for special parts like spoilers or wheels. Cars with carbon cockpits (that are not directly attached to the suspension) are allowed. The engine displacement is limited to 5.5L naturally aspirated or 4.0L turbo/supercharged.
