I don't know if it's better. It was slightly better on a 1LE Camaro but that has 11's on it. And really I don't think you need more MPH out of 2nd, do you?

No. Me and Heinricy found ourselves using a lot of 1st gear locally. We don't have any huge venues anymore. It seemed like we were using 1st more than second a lot of the time.

well that's a little different reason. But the car has so much torque I can't think it'd really matter that much. Maybe but I tend to like more tire not less.

Not sure if I've missed it. Does anyone have any experience on Rival-S 315's rears and RE-71 275's front set up? Thanks, this thread has been very helpful.

I ran them earlier in the season before the 275 Rival-S was released... IMO, I preferred the car with the Rival-S on the front. That being said, start around 32psi square. The 71R is stiffer than the Rival-S and can run (relatively) lower pressure. Keep in mind this info will also depend on bar size and camber setting so YMMV.

Hey Fellas im looking for a tire that will give me a tiny bit longer wear than my RS3 V2s.
after 5 weekends mine are shot. LOVED there performance, but dont think i can afford to keep up with tire costs at that rate.
2.9 mile high speed road course. most corners in the 70-80mph range. Corner 1 is 140.

will be running a square 285/35/18 or 275/35/18

from my research the RS3s V2 are actually a 140 TW tire with 200 stamped on the side.

suggestions? 71R? NT05? PSS?

Point of clarification... the RS3v2 are something higher than a 200TW tire with 200 stamped on the sidewall. The 71R's (and Rival-S) are probably the softest and closest to a legit 200TW.

The story behind the RS3v1 was that it was rated at 140 so it would appear to be "grippy". Hankook later bumped it to 200 in order to keep it legal for classes (SCCA, LeMons, Chump). Hankook then came out with a faster and grippier v2 that was also rated at 200 (but was softer than the v1). Based on wear rates, it appears that the v2 is "more than 200". Getting 5 weekends out of a set of tires seems awfully good to me...

I never ran anything harder than the 71R/Rival-S on my C5Z... if you're looking to reduce costs, maybe check out the Federal 595RSR?

Decent performance tire and super cheap. I wouldn't expect better wear than the RS3v2 but it may be cheap enough that wear doesn't matter that much?

nice. hadnt come across those. thanks!
not sure im really looking to reduce quality/go with an off brand.
more looking for a quality tire, but with a slightly longer life than the RS3s.

i think something between my RS3 and PSS would be perfect for what im looking for.
i assume i would be disappointed in the PSS track performance with its 300 TW?
although ive seen guys say there better than the NT05 on track, but they were once a year type racers.
also at ~3600lbs car only im alot harder on the tires than yall in the ~3200 vettes.

Federal isn't the typical "go to" performance tire but they had some limited autoX success before the TW requirements bumped up to 200. I've driven an autoX Civic on them and would be comfortable running their stuff on track.

Everyone loves the PSS but it's a little slower and, perhaps more importantly to this conversation, quite a bit more $$$. What's the price difference per set between the RS3, PSS, and 595?

PS2s might last you a bit longer. The grip is ok with a 220tw. I bet they cost more than the RS3v2 though
I also dont think 5 weekends is bad at all for a set of tires on 3400lbs

They make (made?) them in more sizes... they've just been slow to ramp up production since the release of the Rival-S.

I hated the regular Rivals on my S2000. I like the Federal 595RSR and RS3’s on the Corvette. The Federal is a little short, but worked well for me. For a $$ per lap I think you are going to find the 595 and RS3 hard to beat. The new Rival S and Bridgestone’s are faster.

Edit.

All of my tire use is autocross, the 595 may overheat on a road course. I don't really know how they will do on a road course, but they work well for autocross.

200tw Hoosiers?

Mary Pozzi
I'll chime in here and recommend that you add naugahyde covering to your interior door panels (they're "covered," right?) and add a basic carpet with binding on the edges for the floor areas that need to have something on them. If you can get an upholstery shop to do this for you, it might look a little better and you'll be proud to have others look inside the car. My Camaro has a bit of both ... the rear seats are gone but the floor is carpeted and over that are some aluminum panels that complete the interior. Your missing headliner is fine. As for the tires, it's 200 UTQG and the normal players for CAM are BF Goodrich, Falken, and Bridgestone. Some of the smaller tired cars will opt for Toyo and Hankook. Yokohama and Kumho, and even Hoosier, have jumped on the 200 treadwear bandwagon and brought out their own versions of these tires but check SCCA legality before you pull out that credit card. My recommendation is to take a look at what the top competitors and cars are running and don't take advice from those that sit on the sidelines content to only watch ...

There are really only two choices if you want to win, Rival-S or RE71R. The Kumho V720s seem to be almost as fast but having wear issues.

The RS3v2 will get you close, but they are a whole generation behind. The Federal 595RSR only come in 140TW so they are not legal for SCCA Street, CAM, or ST classes.
