New Nitto NT05's
Just put a new set of Nitto NT05 on and first autocross of the season is 3/28. Anything I should do to "break them in" beforehand? I drive my c4 to the event (approx 30mi).

There may still be some mold release compound on them which may make them feel a bit greasy, but the driving distance to the site should remove it. Then just adjust tire pressures and you should be OK.

I had a few sets of NT-05s. I only was able to get them up to their operating temperature once, and that was with a codriver on a 90F+ day with full sun on asphalt. They need a truck-load of heat to work right. They are better suited as a budget HPDE tire, IMO.

You were probably running them with way too much pressure. The NT05s get hot very quickly and will get greasy quick when hot. I did run them on both the C4Z51 and the C5Z06 in the North East where it never gets that hot! It is still a budget tire so don't expect Pilot Sport Cup performance but if you keep your tire pressure right, they will heat up quick.

I have used R888 for a season and really like them. Good feedback, great grip, and it was easy for me to find their break point.

Not the ideal choice for autocross... plus the NT05 allow you to run in street class vs an r-comp class. There are better options than the NT05 for street tire though, and better options than R888 for an autocross focused r-comp.

I run a 315 square setup A6s in XP.
