Default What oil should I run for doing Fall track days & street driving?

I need an oil change and will be at the track about 5x next month.

What brand oil and weight would you recommend?

I have another question unrelated to the track. I purchased my Vette last week and it had a fresh oil change and the OLM showed 95% remaining. I have driven it 1400 miles since then, 1200 miles were a highway drive home from purchasing the car so very easy and low rpm driving and the OLM already reads at 52%. So I've used up approximately 1/2 my oil life in 1400 miles, 90% highway cruising. That doesn't seem correct. Is it?

Thanks.

I use Mobil 0w-40 as it sits nicely between the 5-30 and 15w50. Easily found at Walmart too

Right now I'm on Mobil 1 5w30 high mileage, have used the 0w40 in the past. In doing a bit more research online/bob is the oil guy looking at fresh oil samples I think the 0w40 may be one of the best ways to go as far as "bang for your buck". Ultimately there are a ton of factors in this-- track setup, experience, any aftermarket coolers etc etc. What sort of oil temps have you been seeing on the track?

Well I've only had the car for a week so I haven't been to the track with it yet.

But I already bought a track package and plan on doing a lot of tracking starting in about 3-4 weeks.

I use the same, good compromise for anything short of actual race duty IMO.

0/40 Mobil 1 is what I have been using with great results and oil analysis reports. During very hot weeks for track I use 5qts o/40 and 5 qts 15/50 but only for 0ver 90 degrees. The newer z28 w. the LS7 calls for 15/50 for track use only. 0/40 covers everything pretty well. Once the outside temps cool it does take a bit to warm up.

I bet the seller did not really do an oil change. Who knows.

Drop the oil and use fresh Mobil 1 factory recommended weight and reset the counter yourself.

I did exactly that - never trusting a dealer or any seller- and have done 500 mile interval analysis every 500 miles since.

The reports say the oil is perfect under 1800 miles of track time and three or four evaluations.

I'm now going to extend the miles between checks to 1000. 500, even under all track usage is too short.

I'd be happy to send you my reports. My car is a 2012 ZO6 bought with 1800 miles on it and now 3600. Run fresh factory fill spec Mobil 1 and you are set for a while.

So the OLM doesn't use accumulated revs or some other calculated measurement of oil life but instead measures oil pressure or something else to calculate wear? Because the OLM read 95% remaining when I departed for my 1100 mile roadtrip home.

Thanks!

I run 15W-50 for track events. Its a PITA because it needs 15 minutes to warm up to a temp where you can whoop on it. I use Mobil 1.

Agreed! Thats why I don't like it for the street. Even in Fla. But my oil analysis come back much better using it on the track. Then when the new Z28 7.0 came out GM recommends it for the track only for the same reason.

Is it important that I run a Dexos 1 rated oil or can I just grab a 5w-40 synthetic in my preferred brand?

Thanks.

Dexos is for warranty and for the new cars. 5/40 synthetic in a C6 is the way to go. It does take a few more minutes to warm up in cool weather but just take it easy when you first pull out. 5/40 mobil 1 is readily available at Walmart.

I ran 5w40 Rotella T6 synthetic in my track turbo Miata, with good results. I just did my first oil change in my C5 with the same. I've got my first track day with it coming up in November, so I'll see how it does. I'm a stickler for letting the car warm up before hard revving.
