That's something I was wondering about: is it possible to get it sans engine? I'm not ever going to be Spec Racing, just track days, so I'd prefer an engine I know a bit more about with an open engine controller.

you could get anything, but the bell housing is a very integrated part of the car. it holds the oil tank and is machined to take that engine. The trans holds the rear suspension. your stuck using it. it would be easier to get the car and add a turbo. 300hp would be very easy with a small turbo on that engine. you already have a AEM ecu. all you would need to do is literally add the turbo and get it tuned.

I suspected, but I hadn't looked up the HP of the elan when I posted that.

The trans is only rated to 185lb/ft of tq, I'd be leery of asking for much more out of the engine given that the transaxle is probably the most expensive part on the car.

Right. The custom bell (it's the bulk of the engine mount) along with the lightweight torque rating of the transaxle really discourages swapping out the drivetrain.

Not that the car needs to have more power, really. I just don't need or want a locked-out spec racer. I just want something safer and still fun for track days.

i was asking elan what the trans is rated for. basically the trans company (forgot the name) doesn't power rate the trans. you call in, tell them what engine you want to use, and they say if it's OK or not. If you where looking to get more power out of the NP01 i would ask elan what would be a safe level. they are all race car builds and hot rodders. they have looked into adding power.

right if it was my car and i was looking to make it faster i would go down the aero path. this car really needs to have a diffuser. you losing a lot of drag free down force without it.

We almost did, I had to ditch in the grass twice to keep from hitting him.
