I believe they should get rid of electronic motors in every form of motorsport. Unless you consider Tyco tracks motorsports.
Imagine a modern aero F1 car with a crackling fire spitting turbo of old. None of that stupid burble of the electric motor generator eating the turbo sound. How much do the electric motors and batteries weigh?
Give them a decent size fuel cell and say that's the amount you can use in a race, If they want to make 1200 hp and run out of fuel in 10 laps fine.

Now this is really weird - at least to me. Here's
with no driver. You won't even need a roll cage in these cars.

I saw on a recent Jay Leno's Garage a driverless Audi ran consistent 2:00 (+/- .1 sec.) laps at Sonoma Raceway. Pretty impressive but, they'll never take my racecar.

I think we have a new definition for vintage racing.
If the car requires a driver it's a vintage race car.

They're planning on 10 teams with 2 cars per team. That's 20 driverless cars on the track at the same time.
I get the feeling they might be at Long Beach in 2016. Now that would be worth the price of admission.
Here's the press release.

So essentially the NASCAR model without drivers, wonder if they'll borrow the COT label from them?

Watching that race would be about as exciting as watching paint dry on a wall. The first few races might have some decent carnage / destruction of cars till they get the avoidance algorithms worked out. For my viewing dollar NFW !

I could see it being a bit interesting to watch from an enthusiast standpoint pending the strategy chosen. For example:
If they implement some sort of BOP adjustment similar to Lemans, robotic cars capable of driving +/- some tiny fraction of a second without error lap after lap will be far more sensitive to anything that changes the cars performance. So do the teams set the car up with a lower qualifying time in order to grid at the front while being served a higher weight penalty or do they qualify a bit slower in order to have less handicap during the race? And without a human in the car with some shred of self preservation passing seems like it'll be a lot trickier, might get interesting pending that as well?
IDK, having great drivers is still so much of a part of racing that I can't see this really succeeding.

I don't want to watch it, but I do want to play! They should turn it into a sort of game show. Randomly pick folks from the audience to tweak tire pressures, roll bars, pit times, etc. and see who wins!
