Haas F1 having a bad day

Team owner Haas admitted the technical aspects of running a Formula 1 car have taken him by surprise.
"This is not North Carolina, I've come to realise that," Haas told reporters at Barcelona. "The complexity of the cars and the engines, and what they are doing with them is way beyond anything I have ever expected.
"The technical aspects of these cars are fascinating. I think it's a challenge in one hand. On the other hand, I don't think fans really understand how complex it is.
"Even I didn't know. I was kind of naive too about what makes these cars run.
"If you stumble and you don't get up and try again... You are going to stumble. It's a very complex car, it's a complex way to race cars, so right now it's a little bit overwhelming, to be honest with you."

I'm surprised that no one has posted this yet. Here's the new "Halo" head protection system that will be standard fare in 2017.

IMO a low clear screen, like you see on motorcycles, made to proper height is better. Of course that changes aero a lot more, but at least vision is 100%.
This is all about the Massa type incident, yes?
Maybe it's not too bad to "see past" but only drivers can say. I suppose they (F1) will not let Kimi talk. I guess I can understand that.
Still it's obvious small "stuff" can still get past this, like the little piece that hit Massa. Spring, was it?

This is the result of a lot of deaths over the years...in all open racing forms. They don't really want a canopy as it will make it nearly impossible to extricate the driver when the car is upside down. With this setup they can still crawl out.
And also the thing with oils and such getting on the screen would lessen visibility. They can just peel off a tear-off (like normal) with this setup.
Kimi said it was fine...no problems seeing. You are focused so far ahead of you that thing just disappears.
Red Bull is still going forward with a canopy solution to test...and they'll make a decision mid-season so the teams have time to incorporate whichever is approved into the design of their 2017 cars.

Kimi on the Halo: "The visibility is just a little bit limited at the front but I don’t think this is the final version of the device."
The brain can learn to not see stuff like that (you quickly learn to ignore the a-pillars on your car, for example.) The real question is whether it will slow down the recognition of dangers. Being square in the center like that probably minimizes the negatives to some degree. The drivers have done a lot of work on the visibility issue in the simulators. I think this was really more for PR purposes than anything else. He did one lap and then it was removed.
