Sorcery..............
I am thinking about getting into SIM racing/training as I don't run in summer time it's just too damn hot in the south.
Looks like iRacing has the most US tracks. Project cars and Assetto Corsa have the best graphics I have found so far.
This is amazing to watch, dunno how much $ was spent...but damnit man it looks real. Pay attention to the shadows on the dash...the wiper etc...crazy.

i sim race. im in the same boat took the last two months off at the track with the 100+* temps. not fun.
it has helped me progress real life track times SO much faster.
especially the ability to learn new tracks. it also hones your natural reactions to whats happening, and car control. its a great tool. and you can race any time, for free. any time you get the itch.
i would say iRacing is the most realistic by far. however i do feel there tire model is a bit more slippery than actual real life.
i also have Project cars, Dirt Rally, rFactor2, and about to pick up Assetto Corsa.
these are all "sims" but lean a bit more towards Sim-cades. ie abit more arcade aspects to there physics. but are still great games/sims.
project cars has the best graphics, but the force feedback is the worst and ruins the game for me.
iRacing has the "worst" graphics, but they are also the easiest on computer, ie it doesnt take a powerful computer to run at all. has the best feel/physics by far.

heres my first setup. if your interested in costs.
Computer- $500 walmart tower
Wheel/pedals- Logitech G27 $199 (now 225-250)
RaceRoom Cockpit $299
Monitor (TV)
this setup is great for iRacing. but tower cant handle graphics of other sims/games. you have to turn them down to low/medium.
my current setup
Computer- hand picked components, buddy assembled the tower. it was $1200-$1500 i cant remember now. can run any sim on Ultra graphics settings.
wheel/Pedals- "upgraded" to Thustmaster. alot better quality, but to be honest i miss the feel of the G27. $675ish
same RR cockpit $299
same TV

Drifting
I've had my SimCraft (full motion) for a few months now, it is AMAZING!! I'm pretty much exclusive to iRacing. The physics are really good. I finally decided to drive the 'ring last week....oh....my.....goodness......most intense 1.5 hours I've ever spent in the sim!!!!!!! You can feel EVERYTHING....all of the elevation changes....the undulations, etc....WOW!! BTW - my sim rooms has been blacked out since this pic was taken (this was when it was first fired up).

Man
While I've been limited to a PS3 and GT with Logitech FF wheel I hold between my knees.
But I have spent hours at the ring, Its been a while but I knew the track. And it has to help once you actually get to the track, thought iRacings tracks were kind of pricey. Alas I can only live vicariously by reading posts like this
That SimCraft is fracking so cool, but definitely out of the budget. Though once my son moves out I have a black room for it

That's only one set of tires and a wheel, not 4 wheels, 1 wheel
What did you need for a computer? and when did you build it, cause that makes a big difference.
I might decide to start building race sim computers
I built a big honking server for work like 4 years ago, and built a PC that's about 80% of the performance for about 1/10 the servers cost last year.
