Default X-Grip Cell Phone Mount for recording Video... anyone try this?

I'm looking to see if anyone has used the the Ram Mount X-Grip phone holder during a track event with success. Everything I've found so far looks promising but some additional feedback would be helpful.

I already have a Contour HD that I use to record video but want to try some things with the cell phone.

That's what I use and I am pleased. I suction cup to the bottom of the windshield and have the lower left corner of the phone touch the "hump" on the dash for the instrument cluster as that seems to help steady the setup for videos. Here's a sample:

Also had to add a short section in between the suction cup mount and the x-grip. it has ball and socket connections to get the angle correct and the camera facing front. I can send a picture tomorrow of my setup if you need.

Thanks for sharing that video tmtaylor.
Are you using anything extra to secure the phone such as the WebGrip?

I don't like the x-grip, it will still rotate something like 30 degrees-ish after it has clamped down on the phone.

I tried out this grip/holder and like it much more. Thing is rock solid.

Don't think I use anything other than suction mount, the extension piece and the x-grip. The x grip accommodates different phones and the varying camera locations pretty well. I haven't had an issue with it rotating like Aaron mentioned, but mount it so the instrument cluster hump would limit that. I get back to house tomorrow and will take some shots of my "rig" an attach them here.

It probably wouldn't be a huge deal to most, but it annoyed me. After it clamps down, it still has some rotational play in it. The biggest disadvantage to what I posted is you once you set it up, you can really only use it with one particular device unless you go back and adjust the little arm things.. x grip much more universal and works well if you want to use same mount for multiple things.

I use it as well. It works fine for me, but definitely has screen shake. I expect the "play" in the rotation causes a good bit of it, and it may be reduced with a fixed mount.

I see what Aaron was talking about with the x-grip device rotating. I think the way I mount mine is why I haven't had an issue.

Here the setup in the car and by itself

try slipgripcarmounts.com. they make custom molded holders with RAM ball mounts. only downside is you have to buy one made for your phone so when you get a new phone chances are it may no longer fit.

Yea I tried the X-grip too and didn't like it. Same problem with it rotating. I made a holder out of an old phone mount and attached a case that fits my phone to it. That works much better.

The slipgripcarmounts looks pretty solid, the only down side is that they seem to be priced a bit on the high side.

I had the x grip, hated the rotation like everyone else, and switched to this ram mount...

I also like the old scholl Iottie mount, but its been discontinued

Thanks to this thread I invested in the xgrip. I fully understand the rotatable nature of this setup but after playing around with it for an hour or so I rigged, yes rigged this setup. I know it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but so far so good. This setup allows you to get your phone in as one of the arms is free to move. iphone 6

true but it's rock solid once mounted.

Rather than buy the slip grip, I replaced my x-grip with a phone specific ram mount and that combo is better IMO.

I thought about that mount as well and figured I'd pick that up if the xgrip didn't work well. Do you have a picture of the setup in the car? Any wiggle room or play?
