How to get into SCCA T1?
I'm thinking of doing some upgrades for open track events, with an eye toward running my Z06 in regional T1 on a modest budget. What are the largest wheel/tire sizes allowed? Engine mods allowed? Suspension mods? Rollcages? Gutted interiors?

I reccomend that you go to http://www.scca.org and also get a copy of the 2003 SCCA GCR (general competition rules) for club racing. There you will find all of your answers on safety equipment, licensing, class rules, etc. You will need a roll cage plus other safety equipment. This is not a cheap venture, even in T1 class. Play safe!@

6-pt cage, seat, fire bottle, harness, etc required.
Only modifications allowed:
17x10, 17x11 wheels with up to 335 tires. air filter change (only, not box), remove mufflers (cats intact), brake ducts, T1 suspension kit. All brakes (other than pads) and interior compenets must be OEM.
Also, bolt-in cages are no longer legal, so it is a PITA to build a T1 car, as a T1 car really isn't a race car. Just a "safe" street car.

I assume most run 315s in the back, 17x11 wheels seem a bit narrow for 335 tires.

Re: How to get into SCCA T1? (Gradenko)
I did it. But as someone said (Dave Farmer?) - now it is hardly worth it.
Older cars (as my 2000 FRC) are grandfathered in (SCCA) with a pretty simple bolt-in 6-point cage. My log book (despite the fact I no longer race the car in SCCA) covers that. But since you have to tear up the interior of your later model car completely, it only works if you are willing to do much more radical surgery to make it competitive and compliant.
If you might be interested in a 2000 FRC (w/LS6 engine to T-1 specs) let me know.

Re: How to get into SCCA T1? (Zee Freak)
Gary,
I was in your position about two years ago. I knew my long term goal was SCCA T1 racing, but in the interim, I wanted to do DEs.
I did upgrade my car for DEs while keeping my mods T1 legal. As said above, the key is to get a copy of the SCCA GCR and read the Touring section.
I did wheels, tires, brake lines, racing seat, oil cooler myself for DEs. This January I broke down and took my car to Phoenix (mentioned above) and let them do the full SCCA T1 prep:
The T1 class is a stock based class, so the cars really are nearly stock.
The SCCA T1 rules require:
- Eight point roll cage with dual NASCAR door bars (unless car was built and teched for T1 racing prior to 2003, then it may be grandfathered to old rollcage rules. Note this has nothing to do with car year. A 2000 car prepped this year would need to follow the new rules)
- Racing seat
- Racing harness
- Fire Extinguisher
- Window net
- Disabling Air bags
The SCCA T1 rules allow:
- GM Motorsports T1 suspension kit (stiffer leaf springs, anti-sway bars, Sachs Shocks, stiffer rubber in front a-arms)
- oil cooler
- tranny cooler
- accusump
- AC system removal
- radio removal
- air bag removal
- side window removal
- muffler removal and replacement with straight through pipe
- DRM brake ducts
- DRM heavy duty radiator
- 17x10 front and 17x11 wheels
- DOT R compound tires (either 275 front/315 rear or 315 front and rear, plus or minus 20 mm on any width)
- steering wheel replacement
- stainless steel brake lines
- any brake pads
Mine has all of the above with the exception of my side windows are still functional.
FYI, Goodyear doesn't make the GS-CS in 335, so those of us running Goodyears run 315s all around. This tire has won the SCCA National Championship at least four of the last five years. I used it this year, my rookie year to go from no license to a 6th place finish in the SCCA Valvovline Runoffs.

Re: How to get into SCCA T1? (larryfs)
For SCCA T1, disabling or removing air bags is mandatory.
17x10 is max front wheel. 17x11 okay for rear.
