What brake set-up does NASCAR run?
I heard they run 13" rotors but that is all I know. Calipers and rotors are?
Why does the rear of the body seem to be cut high on the quarter panels?
thanks!

Re: What brake set-up does NASCAR run? (John Shiels)
The rule in Nascar for the rotor size is 12.87 Just like the C5. They use all brands of calipers, Wilwood, Brembo, AP and Alcon. Wilwood and Brembo cover about 75% of the field. The remaining 25% use the other brands.
They can also use as thick as 1.4". on the short tracks to help with the heat.
The quarter panels are cut high to let the air out from under the car. The wind tunel showed that it lets the air escape easier. They cannot close off the bottom of the car for air flow either. the frame and under side must have the exposed frame as the lowest part of the car without any smooth underside.

Lou, are the NA$CAR Wilwood's the " J " pad???
Wilwood seems to indicate NA$CAR uses them in the advertising.

It depends on the track. I think their most agressive pad is the "A" pad compound.

Thanks for the info Lou. What caliper in Wilwood do they pick? I guess in a oval race they are just tapping them unlike a road course no?

John the NASCAR teams also use a recirculation system on the heavy braking tracks ie. Watkins Glen, Martinsville, Bristol etc., that means you have to have the inner and outer pistons separated so the fluid can flow through the caliper. :chevy

Matt I think Wilwood had that on there site and it wasn't all that bad of a price.

John,
next time the NASCAR boys are @ Martinsville make sure you watch the race. Martinsville is the most abusive track on brakes for any race car on the planet. The TV coverage has brake cams that show how the rotors glow almost the entire lap, for 400 laps. Infact it is not uncommon to have tire beads melt from the heat.
People don't realize how much configuration changes on NASCAR cars from track to track. That's why they have 18-22 cars for each driver. Short tracks, road courses, super speedways, medium tracks, and special cars for Daytona, Indy, and Bristol.
NASCAR cars probably have 3-5 different caliper(s) set ups depending on what type of track they are on.

John, the Martinsville track looks like a paper clip. The straights are long in compairson to the turns, which are very tight. As a result they hit some pretty high speeds on the straights, but have to slow down a lot to stay on the track in the turns. They're turning laps at less than 30 sec, so they are hauling down from about 150 to about 50 about 4 times a minute. (I'm not sure of those speeds). But never the less, there is a lot of energy being dissapated through the brakes in a very short time :mad :mad :mad , so their brakes tak one hell of a beating.
